Wasn't the southern policy to electrify though? Outside that they had plenty of Bulleid pacifics to handle heavier loads, the Q1s for freight and Leader was meant to, in theory, mop up everything else!

That's maybe a bit harsh. Bear in mind Bulleid built 140 Pacifics in two varieties. There were also standard EMUs for much of the passenger service.

It's flight of fancy, but I think you could imagine a highly standardised 1960 Southern Railway in which nationalisation and the BR Modernisation plan hadn't happened, in which Merchant Navies handled the principle expresses; WC/BB the mixed traffic and secondary passenger duties; the Q1 the freight; the Leader the extended cross-country line duties (i.e. west of Exeter); suburban and some main lines were electrified; 350hp diesels did the shunting; and a few branch lines (such as Hayling Island, Lyme Regis) were shut or maybe operated with DEMUs.

Edit: @andrewtoplis had a substantially similar thought.

Peter Smith wrote that he believed that on the S and D the BR 5s were considered to be marginally better than the LMS ones. He certainly had a high regard for both.

I never spoke to Peter Smith; working from Edge Hill I wouldn't bump into him, even if he was still on the railway. But I did speak to many others.

So what you're really asking is 'Does a group that doesn't exist plan to build a new Leader?'
I think the answer should be obvious.

The question is Has anyone ever tried as there has been lots of plans for engines which haven’t been built now because they started and realised they were more difficult to finish. It is an interesting engine

Wonder what codes the derailment as the engine looks very powerful perhaps it was the tracks fault

Yes. Really, it was. There are complete dogs, and then there was the Leader.
