She was actually used on special train duty on 4/8/68 - I found this, which may be of interest

Wasn't that just the boiler Andy? The frames/cylinders are supposedly at the ELR, not sure about the loco wheels or tender chassis.

J&A Brown's RODs lasted till 1973. Some were ex GCR, not BR, unsure when the last one was cut though? And ex LMS 8Fs in Turkey?

It was one of the 20 locos still at Lostock Hall on 5/1/69 so couldn't have laid about at Cashmore's for long if it was cut up in the March.

But were any ex-BR? As soon as you go beyond locos purchased from BR for scrap in the OP there are things like the LT panniers which come into the picture. At least they were ex-BR.

I know it's Woodhams which you wanted to exclude but they scrapped 76080 in 1972 and 3817 in 1973 I believe.

We all know that there are Granges, 9F's, Black 5's & 8F's bricked up in tunnels at Edge Hill/Box/Rhydymwyn (take your pick) These were all semi-serious suggestions at one time - unfortunately most, if not all, of the locos involved are accounted for..........unless it's a Gov't 'cover up'??

:Banghead::Banghead: Repeat after me, " There is no such thing as the strategic reserve " that Grange, you saw, piloting an 67, on an post overhaul shakedown run from Swindon to Bristol , was a figment of your imagination .;)

The Black 5's scrapped at Cohen's yard at Cargo Fleet Middlesbrough were still around in Autumn 1969. Apart from events during that year, visiting the site on a regular basis, I do not have any other records. I am pretty sure they arrived around February/March 69. The dates on here may state disposal, but do not include cutting dates https://railuk.info/steam/getscrap.php?id=35

Surely the only appropriate loco's for the Strategic Reserve are King Arthur's - havnt you seen the almost completely obliterated trackbed that heads under Glastonbury Tor

The tunnels at Rhydymwyn are going to be open to the public soon (see North Wales Daily Post website)
Unfortunately there are no steam locos to be seen.

Did any more Panniers work in industry (I'm thinking 7714 and 7754 working for the NCB in South Wales) until later dates and weren't lucky enough to end up preserved? And when did 1502/09 get cut up at Cashmores? Was that about 1970?

From what I remember at the time the boiler was cut up at Simms metals Nottingham and the wheels, tender etc cut up at a commercial scrap merchants in Lincolnshire following sequestration. Yes the loco frames survived for a while, but on their own even if they still exist its not a credible restoration project. So to my mind its the last ex BR steam loco to be scrapped... terrible shame in my view...

Thanks for the update - I thought more of it had survived that might have made it viable for restoration. A sad end

Yes, 1502/09 were cut up in October 1970 according to the last SVR Stock Book.
