Tourism contributes £ 6 bn to the Scottish economy annually, Scottish Govt compensatory grants issued stand at £ 200 m to date, the gap will be felt by some.

I see that according to BBC News, the transport minister Grant Shapps has just made a statement advising people not to book summer holidays for later in the year. It will be interesting to see if his Scottish counterpart Michael Matheson has the same opinion.

Crivvens! I really set the hares running on that one.

The £10B per annum tourism industry up here is going to take a big old hit, no one is immune unfortunately. As its true for Wales, Yorkshire, etc etc

It is a shame the Jacobite may not run this year, I think that date might get pushed back again, but in principle the MP is right in what he is saying. Could he have executed this better? Perhaps. But he also applied significant pressure to AirBnB who were also taking bookings, so there is at least some consistency in his actions.

This whole affair is awful. If we could refrain from Nat Bashing(fun though it may be) that would serve us all I feel. Politics in general is surely on hold while people are dying from this. Now, if you want to have a pop at Charlie for bringing the disease to Upper Deeside I'm all ears... ;) See what I did there...?!

When we do get steam again on the WHL it will be all the sweeter. I sincerely hope WCRC are front and centre on that as they have been for some time.

I don't get how the Jacobite (and all other mainline steam for that matter) could run under social distancing rules. Could someone please explain to me whether it could or not and if so what would be different to normal?

Some London commuter services are running pretty full, so no social distancing there.

No it’s the Grog! Last year it was up for sale so I hope the new owner doesn’t change the place. Looking forward to the curly chips again

The difference is that is commuters going to work, not people out for a jolly that isn't necessary.

Taking all these comments together (that I don't personally have any problem with) it seems to me that the government is between a rock and a hard place over this one.

At some point there will be a planned relaxation of the current controls through a phased change. At present nobody is prepared to say what that will look like probably because they haven't a clue and wrongly think that the country cannot be trusted were they to be told. Well, not in this country anyway. Transport will be an issue though.

Crowded trains will simply re-ignite the spread of the virus until a vaccine is found. But necessary journeys will be essential to get the economy moving again, albeit, possibly in a managed way. (At present down my way you could have a set of seats or almost a carriage to yourself on some trains at present.)

So, to minimise potential risk you just cannot have unnecessary journeys by rail taking place. Daily commute to Mallaig? - possibly. Tourist train - i.e. The Jacobite - definitely not.

Completely agree. I love travelling by train but how many of the journeys that I have ever done have been necessary? Answer=0! So I accept it will be a while before I'm able to travel on a train again as the chance of me making an essential journey by train is 0. It frustrates me enormously but its the way the situation is. The question is when will the balance tip from prioritising health to prioritising the economy? That could be the moment where unnecessary travel could happen again.

I don’t think anyone has suggested travelling anywhere. The restrictions on car travel will probably go first, everyone is self isolated in their own vehicle

I fear so...a disaster for the environment and for social justice. I fear too for town and city centres, they'll have lost even more to the Thatcher+ out of town shops and the internet.

Agree. With family in London we contrast and compare our respective lives daily and I have to say that sadly where I am things are much easier than where they are. Get transport moving again in cities and it will be tricky to manage. Bring on the bikes I say.

You must be bitter and desperate when you have to bring Mrs Thatcher into this discussion, maybe you hadn't noticed, she stepped down as PM 30 years ago, left parliament 3years later and died 7 years ago. Things have moved on, why can't you.

Why a disaster for the environment? Town centre shopping has gone anyway, why would anyone drive to a town centre, pay an extortionate fee to park their car when they can stay at home and shop with a few clicks of a mouse? Out of town shopping is easier, they are out of town and free parking
