So thanks to that thing going around, is it the first time there has been no std gauge steam loco's runnig?, when steam finished on the mainline, there was plenty of industrial users keeping things going, also LT, and preserved railways, but is this the first "gap".

Best wishes in these horrible times.

    oh and

Sod the clap, extra £1000 a week to NHS staff, tax free, till this is all over !!!!

They should get it, and now, no questions asked.

I think I might have set the bar too low, maybe £2000, would be better, and cheap at half the price, not much for bringing something home that could wipe your family out.

I didn't clap, and I won't, they are worth alot more than that, tell everyone.

So if I made one piont, did I make another ?, I suppose there could be std gauge steam somewhere in the world ?

This Covid has done what MArple and Beeching couldn't! And closed all the branches and dropped all the fireboxes!

Hopefully it will be reversible in the near future.

Probably May 1955 when the ASLEF strike was on.

I suspect there would have been some operations on industrial lines as the dispute was between ASLEF and British Railways.

    Cheers, Neil

What happened in summer 1976? Were there places where standard gauge steam continued despite the fire risk and water shortages?

Was this a total shutdown? The NUR had a number of footplate staff among its membership and in some areas at least I think there was a limited service.

I didn't take Strikes and the heat waves into account, this might be a hard thing to nail down.

Military railways need to be in the mix, not sure if Longmoor was the only one, or branch of the forces with std gauge steam.

It was so hot in 76 !, the sports feild where I lived (as in our house was in it), went up in flames twice.

    Time machine desperately needed.

    Be safe, be bizzy
