The Duchesses were cut very quickly because they were sold to some of the most efficient yards; it wasn't good business to have locos hanging around for months when the scrap could be sold on.

Before the last 19 were withdrawn in autumn 1964, all of them had been scrapped by BR themselves at Crewe. Of the last 19, Cashmores had 9 and West of Scotland Shipbreaking Company 8. Cashmores were certainly not noted for sentimentality or hanging about. The SVR’s David Williams was on good terms with Mr Beckett, the yard foreman, who related a tale that only once was a scrapping ever queried. In December 1964 one of his cutting up gang entered his bothy and said “Boss, are you sure about this one?” It was 46526 Sir William Stanier, still clean after the RCTS special a few month earlier. Beckett checked his cutting list; indeed it was to be broken up…

The K&WVR did, apparently, enquire whether 44894 at Drapers was available for sale, but cutting had already started.

Very Interesting about 46526, its interesting that this Loco was not included in the list of engines being retained for the national collection, in fact no top link LMS engines seem to have not made their way onto the national collection, until 46229 became available and was only saved by Billy Butlin in the first place.

this was done by Birmingham city council, independently, not as part of the National collection Derby, council also purchased engines direct from BR.

I got confused for a second as I thought that 46526 was an Ivatt 2MT - the Pacific was 46256!

Official BR preservation, I believe you will find, with a lot of digging, that it is owned by the same instrumentality that owns the National Collection housed variously at York, Shildon and other sites.

I don’t know what an instrumentality is but 46235 City of Birmingham isn’t part of the National Collection. It was preserved by the Council but is now owned by a Trust which was set up by the Council. Confusion might have arisen because ‘science museum’ is part of the Birmingham museum’s name.

What happened to a tiny engine that worked at Southampton docks because apparently it was saved and kept somewhere but then there was no idea where it is any more

You don't mean Cunarder? The industrial tank made to look like a Fowler dock tank by taking the saddle off and fitting side tanks?
Never a BR machine and still with us based on the South Coast somewhere Portland I think.
