Looks like something that would come in a Hornby starter train set lol

Fascinating little locos, with an interesting back story. They didn't start out looking like that. Here's the relevant page from http://www.semgonline.com/steam/c14_01.html

I'm not 100% certain, but I think at the time they were built (1907/8) they would have been the very last single driver loco built for a major British railway company. (Can anyone think of a later example). If so, it is interesting (*) pub quiz territory: "What was the final British single driver loco to be constructed?" and then have people desperately trying to work out if Ivatt made an updated Stirling single or Deeley constructed some late pattern Midland spinner in the run up to the Great War!

    (*) Interesting is a relative term ...

Well, Ivatt *did* make a later single for the GNR, although not really an updated version of the Stirling ones, and at the beginning of that decade:

    I that in mind ;)

Remember seeing a photo of it (might have been in "Master Builders of Steam") and thinking "wow - Ivatt. Really? What happened to the other axle?" Though I guess not completely out of the realms of other locos of the era, for example Wordsell built some singles on the NER, including a class of Wordsell-Von Borries compound singles ...

Ironically, of course, there are preserved locos containing less original material now than Beachy Head will do...
Certainly true in the narrow gauge (Talyllyn, River Esk, Merddin Emrys come to mind).
But then how much of Derby is there in Royal Scot now?

If we are playing the let’s build a loco from fragments of what is left then the SVR could use the cylinder block they have off a 61xx which is at Eardington - recovered from Briton Ferry...

Has there been a true menagerie of parts that have built one locomotive in preservation? Theres plenty of examples in the distant past but I can't think of any modern ones. I don't count the WSR 2-6-0 or Andy Booth's former Austerity.

I take it you mean steam locos, as many diesels are amalgamations of two or more machines.

Not entirely sure what you mean, but from what I can gather many Barry restorations include secondhand parts that weren't on the locomotive when it was retrieved from the scrapyard. One might suspect that the ownership trail for some of those parts might be a little murky too...

Do you mean, 'which locomotive mostly closely resembles Frankenstein's monster of stitched together body parts?'

Any idea what Loco it came off ? If it came from Briton Ferry, i'd guess it was a loco scrapped by one of the numerous yards in the area.

The NRM’s Iron Duke replica contains an Austerity boiler, cylinders and motion parts which are not exact but near enough the original dimensions.
