Which reminds me; when I worked for BR Southern for the CM&EE Dept, I was told that the only tool they ever used at Stewarts Lane Depot was a 2lb hammer!!

Maybe they did more delicate work ?

 

Probably because the Chatham engines were built by artisans whereas the South Western ones were built and maintained by members of the Associated Union of Millwrights, Shipbuilders and one-armed Blacksmiths ...

The WSR seems to have watched a series about a hotel in Torquay and mistakenly thought it was a documentary. ‘We should run the WSR just like that man runs the hotel’.

Ironically, at the height of 'Fawlty Towers' fame, we went to a wedding reception held in a hotel in Torbay. Everybody called the poor waiter 'Manuel', a situation brought on it part when guests were invited to leave the wedding breakfast and go into the (admittedly nice) gardens via the windows ! Admittedly they were very tall and reached right down almost to the floor, but even so we would have expected 'proper' doors......
