I’ve worked with plenty of enginemen and fitters who’d disagree with you.

 

I speak as I have found. Any fitter who thinks the motion and valves of an unrebuilt are nicer to work on than a rebuilt is a masochist.

As do I. Everyone has their preferences. Hell, some people even like Great Western engines!

From memory by the time 90775 was in service wasn’t 31806 and 30120 plus 76017 also back in steam again.

 

Several drivers I know, including some BR era, have expressed a preference for the originals, particularly on account of a feeling that they run more freely at speed.

Presumably, just like with cars, the drivers perception may be at variance to the engineer who has to maintain them.

 

Quite how any driver says they prefer to oil up a detuned Bulleid compared with an original, is a mystery to me.

As for maintenance, the same identical things go wrong with both types more often than the different valves, pistons & motion:-
Injectors
Steam brake valve
Blower valve

 

This is the condition of GWR engines I like.

I make no apologies for loving the sight and sound of a Bulleid Pacific on the banks of the Mid-Hants, both original and rebuilt. Here are some scans of Swanage, taken in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

 

Nice set of photos there and the platform at Ropley looks to be busy. Looks to me a fair few people want to ride behind 34105 on that day. Gets my vote. Also to note the two mk2 coaches in NSE livery. What a shame we still don’t have them in NSE livery to go behind 50027 lion. Then we could recreate Waterloo Exeter service.

Re the comment about Bulleid pacifics on the MHR, very few would have seen this photo before, unless you have a copy of the 2020 MNLPS calendar. Taken on Monday 10th March 2014.......... it was a good day!
