thanks Tom - this is the closest I can get from my photo archives admitting that I don't know much about the LNER Atlantic classes. I have no idea who took the image btw.

Not sure if you mean the Steam locos that were scrapped at Woodham's or the single class 21/29 diesel that was disposed of in 1980?

Scrapping at Woodham's in Barry :
    1959 - 9 (3170, 5312, 5345, 5355, 5360, 5392, 5397, 6331, 6334)
    1960 -1 (4164)
    1961 - 21 (4550, 4559, 4594, 5407, 5417, 5510, 5504, 5514, 5546, 6406, 6753, 7702, 7712, 7719, 7725, 8473, 9436, 9438, 9439, 9443, 9459, 9496)
    1962 - 2 (7758, 9492)
    1964 - 2 (5182, 6696)
    1965 - 36 (1367, 1368, 3727, 3794, 4157, 5422, 5510, 5547, 5557, 5558, 5651, 5669, 5794, 6115, 6621, 7226, 7722, 7723, 8419, 8475, 8479, 8749, 9445, 9449, 9462, 9468, 9491, 9499, 30512, 30844, 34045, 34094, 41248, 41303, 80067, 92232)
    1972 - 1 (76080)
    1973 - 1 (3817)
    1980 - 2 (4156, 92085) + 2 diesels (D601, D6122/1)

    EDIT - more details added

Sorry, I meant the class 21/29 that was scrapped in 1980.

But yes, the other locos that did go to Barry and were cut up can be added to the near misses. Do we know what the locos cut up between 59 and 65 were?

Indeed a loss for those that like historic diesel classes, as was D601 Ark Royal deemed a class 41 I believe?

Not that one certainly - that’s got a narrow firebox. LNER isn’t my field either, but I think that is a C2 class.

The Middleton Railway had been in existence for over 50 years before a steam loco was used so I assume the gauge was set when it started in 1758. I will have to look at my history of the Railway and see if I find out more. Do you have any more detail of these wheels?

The Blenkinsop wheelsets at the NRM are not from an early locomotive. I think that they were cast from the original patterns at a much later date but I'm open to correction on the detail of this. There is a major anomaly in them as there are pinions on both ends of the axle, which is obviously an unworkable arrangement unless your track is perfectly straight.

The original Blenkinsop locomotives fell into disuse by about 1836. One of the locomotives was displayed in a shed at Middleton until 1860 when it was unfortunately scrapped. Was this the first preserved railway locomotive?

The first Railway Act for the Middleton Railway dates from 1758 when the line was extended into Leeds
. The waggonways that formed the various parts of the Middleton Railway are earlier than this. Like a lot of early waggonways, they evolved

Wasn't it just a shell? on the subject of hydraulics, wasn't there a warship at Swindon, that lasted some time, was repainted by the apprentices and was cut up. but returning to steam , I can think of several Southern types stored at Fratton that very nearly could have made it into preservation , and of course, W31,that was oh so close,

Someone wrote to Railway Magazine suggesting D601 should be stripped out and the interior used as a meeting or exhibition space. D818 is the one retained at Swindon for a while. At one time there were several withdrawn diesel hydraulics, some preserved some not, gathered around the turntable.

D818 was a bit of wreck from what I was told, despite external appearances.

On the Diesel front: A lot of this is hearsay.
10000 was cleared for the road to Clapham, who were unable to accomodate(it may be they took DELTIC instead....) I spoke to the Derby man who cleared it, he was a Chief Engineer.
LNER 6701(EM1 "TOMMY") was almost saved apparently.
D6319 Class 22 was cut up in error. Apparently already bought. Cut 1972, was the first preserved diesel. "Who'd want to preserve a diesel anyway?"
D818 Glory lingered until 1985 but was stripped for bogies and spares, which now rot away outside somewhere anyway. A great loss.
47901 people tried to buy it, but it had some "unfixable" problem and was rejected.
Class 15 ABD9680000 was started up at Vic Berry's as late as 1991 but passed over.
LAst headcode 24 142 was looked at , again deemed unrestorable due to lack of cables(nowadays, possible)
Of course the Barry NBL Warship D601 ARK ROYAL and D6122
Someone tried to buy a Blue Pullman and run it as a luxury train, Blue asbestor put paid to this.

I think losing D5901 was regrettable but I believe the unit was saved and now forms part of rebuild D5910?

Indeed. The same happened with the Class 124s, I understand - the NYMR were looking at this class - and we know that one did run at least once as an excursion from Whitby to Scarborough via the Coast (there is photo evidence), so it would almost certainly have got to Whitby via what is now the NYMR (a photo would be a great thing to find...) - but again, blue asbestos put paid to that idea. Another class that really deserved to be saved - they revolutionised the Liverpool-Hull services when introduced.

Ironically (I was trawling through random odds and sods), the following clip popped up whilst I was composing this. Can't say too much about it, as I'm actually still watching it as I type. At 22 min, usual caveat about watching your mobile data allowances applies:

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...BMAB6BAgDEAQ&usg=AOvVaw0i9MCNctfpZZvfVfXhPuoH

At one point, the CIÉ were seriously considering purchasing and regauging (at least some) sets to 5'-3". I believe the idea was to use them on Dublin-Cork services. The only other deployment likely to justify such services within the RoI would have been Dublin-Galway. I'd not be surprised to learn Dublin-Belfast (Enterprise) services may also have been in mind, though that would've meant getting the still cash strapped NIR interested too.

No idea how far the idea got, or what ultimately put the kybosh on it. Historically, the GS&W was the only Pullman operator in Ireland and they only ever owned a couple of carriages, which rotted away under GSR auspices.

Apparently one ran to Llangollen on an excursion after the line had closed to normal passenger services.
    <<Edit>>Cancel that date info, it was pre-closure;

Not forgetting D0280/1200 'Falcon'; the DEPG apparently had a plan to buy it but the agreement between Brush and BR said it had to be scrapped, so off to Cashmores it went.

You could add in the early DMUs that were preserved and scrapped such as the Park Royals at the WSR.

That was the Diesel Traction Group that wanted to buy Falcon but yes a condition of sale to BR was it being cut up on withdrawl.
Regarding 818 being cut up from what I was told by a member of the DTG they were told it was going to to cut so take what you want before it's gone. Both 821 and 832 have a fair few bits and pieces care of 818.
