I think the problem would be the time spent walking from either Rannoch or Corrour Stations.A lot of time is spent marching. We have done it before but in decent weather.

I think, at the current dearth of steam, we'd all walk over the hills in gale force winds and snow just to see the first train over Rannoch!

44871 & 45407 return south after the 2012 season, hauling the SRPS train to Polmont. Leaving Tulloch at the start of the climb up the side of Loch Treig to Corrour Summit with a familiar face looking out from the front engine.

The end of season journey home in October 2011. 45407 & 44871 have just come round the curve from Arrochar and begin the steep climb to Glen Douglas Summit

    In the beginning :-

Sunday 27th May 1984 -- Although BR had run a press special the previous week it was 36 years ago today that travellers on the SLOA West Highlander tour were the first fare paying passengers to experience steam on the Mallaig line for over 20 years. 5407 hauled two return trips to Mallaig that day the first with a scheduled departure at 9;00 am. The first train open to the public ran the following day.

I'd be surprised if anybody there that first weekend imagined steam would still operate on the West Highland 36 years later. BR ran the service themselves for 11 seasons after which West Coast re-launched the train as the Jacobite. Thanks to everyone who has made this remarkable service happen over those 36 years and long may it continue.
