Just thought I’d start a thread about this locomotive for people to share photos, experiences, anecdotes, rumours and tales.

One thing I would like to see it do, would be to run along the Mid Norfolk Railway, especially considering it used to run along this line often when in normal BR service, but has never done so in preservation. It would be also nice to see it at Norwich station although I appreciate as it isn't main line registered that would be harder. (it was originally a Norwich engine). How about a run from Norwich to Dereham, or even Holt to Dereham via Norwich !

How do you run round at Cromer though? ;) Must admit it would be nice to see it on the Mid Norfolk at some point.

I don't know how difficult it would be to move an engine like the B12 behind a diesel from say the NNR to the MNR. Engines seem to get moved like that from time to time without all the main line equipment being added. How difficult is it to do ? and why doesn't it happen more often. ? it is just down it being cheaper by road ?

Doesn’t a locomotive have to be restored to full main line standard to run on the ‘big’ railway, even if it’s being towed?

Define “mainline standard”. The Wainwright C class and the BR Standard 5mt 73082 have both been moved by rail in-steam, but towed, recently. Obviously neither had the electronic equipment for an unaccompanied move, but under tow my understanding is that it is a question for the body who signed off the move. As I understand it, that included study of maintenance records, measurement of things like tyre profiles, ultrasonic inspection of axles, draw gear etc. It’s certainly feasible, though there are the additional inspection costs to be met, which I suspect is why it is rarely done for one-off moves.

With moving by rail from the North Norfolk to the Mid Norfolk (and beyond!) you have to reverse at Cromer, So you'll need to either top and tail or have something drag you to Cromer from Sheringham and vice versa, it has happened though for the diesel gala in 2014 when 37219, 20059, 40106 and 50007 visited the 37 and 50 were on each end of the convoy.
Regarding @Hicks19862's comment I don't think anything moved by rail has to have a mainline certificate, 73082 being moved by rail from East Grinstead to the West Somerset springs to mind.
Tom's just explained better than I can in the post above.

It still needs registration and putting on to TOPS, even if towed. In the cases Tom mentioned as 98292 and 98582.

Originally there was a triangular junction just outside Cromer. Two sides of the triangle still exist as part of network rail, but the third side was removed as part of the Beeching cuts, but there has been talk of putting it back, and the short viaduct it went over I understand still exists. See picture here. Ideally the NNR should be lobbying to get NR it put back as presumably Network Railway may still own the land. ?
Would avoid then the need for trains to go into Cromer at all. They could go straight from Norwich to Sheringham as in the past.

Why would you do that when Cromer is one of the largest towns in the area?

Yes I know the curve is missing but you'd still have to make a really good case to put it back to Network rail, I believe the local council have safeguarded it so it can't be built over though.

Can’t really see how rebuilding the curve would be beneficial to Network Rail.

Wherever it goes, nothing looks better than when it's coupled to a proper set of LNER teak coaches

This was the first time I travelled behind the B12. It was 1963 and the tour covered some rare track, Broad St-Hitchin-Bedford-Towcester-Stratford on Avon. I joined it here at Finsbury Park. I was 16 and funded fare & film from the proceeds of a paper round, those were the days!

Thanks, it was taken with my Dads old Voightlander twin lens reflex. Unfortunately I’ve lost most of the negatives from this period so this was scanned from an enprint
