Another roasting day in the Churnet Valley. This time with a crew of four managing our social distancing without any problems. Completed the first phase of regrowth clearance just above Iron Bridge so that there are now reasonable photographic options from the canal towpath

Despite it being hot the vegetation on the lineside is very green and lush so the risks associated with a bonfire were considered very small. Had it been more of a heathland with dry grass or bracken the fire would not have happened.

Pictures of TSO E3809 restoration shown on NSRC page. Work has been completed with significant assistance our friends from Batt Holden Ltd.
As stated, plan is to have the vehicle ready for Borders Explorers specials on 7/8 November.
Appeal to cover purchase and transport still open >> https://www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/cvr_coaches <<

A little bit of tree removal today on the Ipstones Branch. This one has been overhanging the line for a bit but has become more obvious since the flailing carried out earlier in the year. Social distancing managed relatively easily, given that we were only a team of three, but full protective clothing was being modelled.

    Call for interest.

In restoring our rake of Mk1s, we are in need of further door skins for a number of doors. After discussing with another group we have found them to be in the same boat, but even with a combined order the outlay has not yet been justifiable.

Is there any other groups out there, who would be interested in making a joint order for these skins in an attempt to try and make this more cost effective for all concerned? If so could you please direct an expression of interest to <jon.kerr @ churnetvalleyrailway.co.uk> with a rough idea of quantity required, and we will get back to you if sufficient interest is generated.

And our budget is presently "toast"! I shall forward it on nevertheless, but I doubt you'll get a positive response from us this side of 2021.

First bit of proper work today for OAPWay with our maximum allowed group of 6, socially distancing of course. Last year when the canal overflowed and washed away a section of track the rebuilt section had steeply sloping ballast shoulders and some had started to slip away. Todays task was to stabilise. Sleeper sections and iron stakes at the ready -

NNX 80214 has been purchased by Batt Holden Ltd. That will utilised as a support vehicle for their activities initially, long term we can only wait and see.

OAPWay were back at Froghall today to continue the work we started before lockdown installing the siding. The switch work had been completed but no siding. Today the aim was to start on the track but circumstances were going to make life difficult. There were things running so we were unable to bring any lifting equipment down from Chedd. The Hiab would have made things much easier but as it was we did everything by hand. Sleepers lifted into place, chairs fitted and then, the most testing, moving a 60ft rail up to the right place in the cess and then maneuvering it over one row of chairs and into its place.

The idea that the Stoke to Leek railway can open as a tram line is a really stupid one which will obviously never happen. What else could you expect from those MPs named?

Mr Gullis has stated this a couple of times from his own social media channels, which is rather frustrating if he wants to be taken serious.

Sadly his submission missed out on June 's second round, I just hope he does some better homework in time for the third round in November.

Jonathon Gullis said they are pitching for light rail which usually means trams but I suppose he could be thinking of Parry People Movers like on the Stourbridge branch but neither of these options will ever gain entry to Stoke Station so it either looks like he is not entirely serious or he just doesn't know what he is talking about. Politicians very often think that trams are somehow cheaper just because the rail is a few pounds lighter but you need costly infrastructure like a tram depot and signalling and in the case of this line there is no scope to build on this and make it part of a tram network as has been done in other cities.

    Three questions:
    1. Why won't a tram gain entry to Stoke-on-Trent station?
    2. Why is Stoke-on-Trent station the necessary and desirable destination for a service from Leek?
    3. Why would a light rail service preclude heritage and/or freight operation over the line?

I'm more interested in how his objective and those of the Churnet Valley could be aligned than trying to make it one versus the other.
