    Maybe.

But given we have the geography we have, where would YOU promote as the destination for a shortened journey for a family arriving at Bishops Lydeard?

I just pity the poor souls who only check this thread once a day and constantly get confronted with 2 or 3 new pages of posts expecting something "new"!

There are several potential options for a shortened WSR. Bishops Lydeard to Norton Fitzwarren is probably the most basic of all possibilities! But I think that none of these options would be ideal. The fundamental problem is that most passengers come from the east and wish to go through to Minehead.

I note that the WSR was able to operate the full 20 miles even in the 1980s, when it was a less developed railway with far fewer passengers than in later years. I assume that operation was possible because regulatory overheads were then less onerous, and because there would have been plenty of residual life in the infrastructure inherited from BR. The small engines and short trains of those years would have produced less track wear. And few paid staff would have been required. Not that I'm suggesting that anyone wants to see a return to the 1980s!

You could always take a trip up to the Nene Valley and see former WSR stalwart 6412 which is there for six months. ;)

If you've fought your way to BL, I'd suggest you remain in the car for another 30 minutes to Minehead with all the facilities and services you need. You have the railway to play on plus the beach etc and you have also saved yourself the extra time it would have taken to wait for your train and then trundle along to the end of the line.

You can say that about all those passengers who fight their way to Pickering and then catch the train to Whitby. 30 minutes by car as opposed to 90 minutes by train. That doesn't stop an awful lot of people from taking the train, though. (In normal times, anyway.) it's part of the JDO.

Absolutely, many people like the idea of using the train to "go" somewhere, even if in reality, the difference between driving to the station and driving to their ultimate destination is marginal in terms of effort.

@Robin Moira White should not be allowed onto a train under any circumstances without a copy of War & Peace, The Wealth of Nations, Lord of the Rings & Dr Zhivago

Not the same though as Bishops Lydeard is nothing like Pickering. Pickering is a destination in its own right whereas BL is rather more of a transit camp prior to the train journey. If you have driven to BL you might as well go the extra distance to Minehead. Whereas if you have driven to Pickering you can stay a while or not, as you choose.
