Suitably watered 'Royal Scot' accelerates away from Appleby working 'The Fellsman' to Carlisle

Fortunately the downpour stopped in time for the arrival of 'Royal Scot' as it approached Aisgill summit with the return 'Fellsman' to Crewe

The combination of 46100 and evening sunshine tempted me out from my lair (twice in a day - whatever next!). My location of choice (for Wilpshire Bank) is the overbridge just beyond the summit but fearing that this might be "crowded" I opted for a spot between Billington and Langho. A curve and trees restricted the view of the approach but the track was visible through Langho station and for a full 1.5 miles before curving to the left. A minute or so after first hearing her 46100 arrived around 3E and worked steadily up the bank with no help from the diesel, the low sun lighting the side of the train as she climbed away. The sound of the exhaust was crisp and clean and could be still be heard long after the train had disappeared from view. Earlier in the month 46115 had passed the same point and the sound from the exhaust was louder and "dirtier" - but not off beat; I wonder what makes the 2 classmates sound so different. Thanks for all the photos and vids, excellent (as usual).

Small entirely irrelevant point, but is there a reason why she seems to sometime carry the board up top and others on the buffer beam, I assume its something to with the wires albeit I don't recall 46115 being similarly affected? Is it as simple as someone forgetting to put it on before she leaves depot at Crewe and thus it having to stay low when later installed?

You’ve nailed it on grounds of safety. Can’t have it on the top bracket if you intend to move it under the wires.

I've seen 45231 and 34046 mentioned for the tour, do we know what will be up front?

I'm staying in Crewe tonight and I definitely heard a Stanier whistle on my way to do some spotting after checking in at the Premier Inn.

46100 was working nicely up towards Hoghton summit, not too much noise from the diesel. Good to have both Scots out on consecutive days; 46115 looks to have nabbed the better weather.

Recently RTT (and OTT) has failed to show a time at Blea Moor for northbound trains but does for southbound. Anyone know why?

A simple record shot of the Scot passing the site of the former Hoghton Station:

The loco doesn't appear till after 1.20.

46100 passes through Armathwaite station, a few minutes early, with the northbound Fellsman on 02.09.20. The bottom image shows the return leg in the rain.
