Of course you are making two important assumptions; 1. that a vaccine will be forthcoming in the 2021 time frame (something I, as a former scientist with some experience in the pharmaceutical R & D field have reservations about - the common cold is a coronavirus and we don't yet have a vaccine for that, for example, or for SARS, which threatened to develop into a pandemic in 2002/3) and 2. that the railway will still be there when things return to normal if everyone else thinks like you. Hopefully they will not.

The NYMR website itself states that the 15:30 from Pickering specifically is steam hauled to Levisham and Diesel hauled back to Pickering, so that seems to be a planned arrangement for whatever reason.

Probably to save on LE mileage - I would imagine that the diesel takes the train back to Pickering and the loco9 continues on to Grosmont. Presumably they're not basing an engine at New Bridge at the moment.

The prime reason for this is signalman's hours. The Grosmont trains are diagrammed for two steam locos apart from the 1st August. There was a problem with 29's injectors on that day 1. I'm not ware of any other substitutions.
Actually, a 9F is a better fit on the table that an S15 as the latter has the longer wheelbase.

We enjoyed a trip today on the NYMR from Grosmont to mile post 18 which is beyond the summit and into the quiet world of Newton Dale. Haulage by J27 and the 9F. The journey was enthusiastic complete with a stop outside Goathland and a volcanic shove from the 9F which was the highlight. All the staff were friendly and helpful it was an unhurried and safe experience. Well done to all involved [IMG][IMG]

NYMR initially ran shuttles Pickering to Levisham and Grosmont to Milepost 18 (past the summit south of Goathland) from the 1st August but from the 17th of August have now been running the Optimist; two return trains per day 9.20 and 12 noon from Pickering to Whitby both allowing some 3 hours in Whitby. Repton, 825 and the 9f have been doing the honours on the Optimist, with the cl 25 taking over from the 9f between Whitby and Pickering. Looks like the Optimist is now running to the 27th September at the earliest.

ps I did the journey last Tuesday behind the 9f and cl 25. An enjoyable day out despite the weather

Thought I would add to the above post: both trains are a mixture of compartment and open stock with intending passengers booking online to reserve their seats, either a whole compartment, a block of four or two seats in the TSO so as to maintain social distancing. The passengers can only join at Pickering and return from Whitby on the same train they traveled out in and occupy the same seats to ensure covid security; thus the 9.20 ex Pickering returns at 14.00 whilst the 12 noon returns at 16.35. This arrangement also gives the unusual sight of two NYMR trains at Whitby at the same time as the 12 noon arrives into platform 1 at Whitby 15 minutes before the 14.00 departs Whitby from platform 2.

TSO stands for Tourist Second Open. A carriage with seating bays of 4 seats arranged around a table. The majority of which seat 64 people, similar to a Mk 3 or Mk4. The Brake equivalent being a Brake Second Open seating 32 in 4 seat bays. Both type also have a pair [usually] of toilets at one end as well.

The Grosmont-Goathland shuttle, otherwise known as the Rail Trail Service, operates twice per day from Grosmont and gives an hour in Goathland for passengers to have a look around the village whilst the train lays over. £30 for a compartment, seating up six adults / children. I’ve already booked my ticket already on a 11 am service ex Grosmont with the intention of having lunch at the Inn on the Moor before walking back to Grosmont on the route of the original horse-drawn railway. Should be a good day out...
