At least we know our way round the M25.

Certainly some railtours have had the ECS propelled out of the station, so no crossover needed.

Facebook rumour mill going into overdrive as usual. "Signalling issues at Lowestoft" is one that seems to be getting bandied around a lot at the moment!

Lowestoft is a messy place to manage a long train. All non-essential track has gone and from what I remember, you cannot leave stock in the station and run around your train. It's a bit like the Blackpool South and the Windermere of the East Coast. Both places where it would be nice to take steam but is now impossible.

More likely as I guess the Norwich loco release crossover issue, if it exists, could be solved by leaving the ECS diesel attached to the tour at Kings Cross (grabs coat and runs for door!)

Can of worms @Gladiator 5076! Leave the diesel on the back and Lowestoft becomes more straightforward as well, so given that West Coast has been known to use that option when necessary, I suspect that the NR/operational issue that's caused the cancellation is not that obvious.

The letter advising of the cancellation refers to "a collection of issues", so it could be any or all of those already mentioned and more besides.

Not been to Lowestoft since last December, but I believe they have completely revamped/relaid a lot of sidings in what was the goods yard area as part of the fairly recent resignalling works, theoretically for freight traffic, so the old, weed strewn "dodgy" trackwork shouldn't be there now!

We had a 47 as tailgunner on the Ticket to Ride trip. it was kept out of use except for the ECS moves. Made life at Liverpool dead easy operationally.

There isn't much left at Lowestoft! From the August 2020 NESA, it looks as if they will need to shunt to the goods
yard via Oulton Broad North Jn. Then it all depends if there are suitable local working instructions to allow such a movement.

    Cheers, Neil

And NR definitely doesn't like trains being propelled anything other than a short distance - witness the problems for a while at Aberdeen to Ferryhill.

Oh well, the weather in East Anglia promises to be absolutely shocking over the weekend, at least we stay dry at home. I'll drag out my copy of "John Frankenhiemers - The Train" to watch over a beer and a pork pie.

I have to say the railway scenes in that are simply superb (particularly for anyone who can remember French steam). Apparently it was the last big action film made in black and white, and probably all the better for it.

And I gather that the crash scene was captured by luck by one camera that the train just missed when all the other cameras failed.

The story behind making the film is a film script of its own.
