The stop at Malton is for pathing purposes, overtaken by 1T64 1134 SCA-YRK which also gives a chance to check the defective vehicle.
Looking at the point to point running times, 5Z70 will be initially restricted to 45mph as the timings are slower than 5Z69 running tender first at 50 mph.
If the brakes on the defective coach are isolated the train will need to be marshalled to depart from Scarborough with three fitted vehicles behind it.

    Cheers, Neil

Many thanks for that. Not sure I understand your point about three fitted vehicles, though - if the defective coach is isolated, then I would have thought only the support coach was fitted? Are there more coaches going back to Carnforth than just these two?

Aren't there certain rules that if there is an unbraked vehicle in the consist there should be x number of braked to compensate for this. I recall this coming up when 46229 was moved from Tyseley to York in her streamlined condition and they took along 3 coaches for the trip.

Would a diesel count as three coaches?

I have no idea, my recollection only related to this matter being raised when 46229 was moved in what appeared to be similar circumstances. I imagine that @Romsey can probably answer in a manner which is based upon fact and knowledge of the rule book rather than my vague recollections.

Neither of those paths seem to have been activated and I can't see anything sign of it on the RTC diagrams,

Is the Waverley stock still at York? If so it is possible "Alberta" may take some with her to Scarborough, then attach to the rest at Holgate (with or without a diesel) on the return? Or simply take the whole lot to Scarborough and attach the defective coach.

Good question. I have a feeling it went back w/c 7th September, but I may be wrong and unfortunately RTT only goes back a week.

Stock used on the Waverley I would say was most recently used on the Cumbrian Coast Express last Saturday.

Ah thanks, I couldn't remember seeing it back from York on RTT, but, seemingly in common with some others on this thread, memory or any kind of brainpower is sometimes in short supply these days. Will have to wait and see what turns up tomorrow then.

Thanks, Henry, that's very helpful. I thought it went before then, but obviously my memory is playing tricks.

No a DL in the train wouldn't count as three vehicles although it could well exert more brake force than 3 empty freight vehicles. It would count as one vehicle. In some circumstances the rulebook and other working instructions can seem illogical for a given situation, but it is better to err on the side of safety and have one clear instruction for a range of similar situations.
If a DL is part of the formation the three vehicles behind the piped only vehicle could be the WCRC PO brake, a.n. other compatible braked vehicle and the DL.

    Does that help?

    Cheers, Neil

Yes thank you Neil. I haven't seen anything on RTT heading from Carnforth to York, and the layover time at Holgate is quite short, but all will be revealed tomorrow.

But as we know tender first is 45 mph, not 50.
