Can I just say I rather like 60163 in that shade of green!

I completely agree. With the previous livery I would rather have seen it in LNER apple green. I also like the fact they painted the support coach maroon to match up to the stock it will be using most of the time now that it seems to be operated more by WCRC than DBC.

The proper green. If 60163 had been built in Dec1949/Jan50, immediately following 60162 it would have been turned out in Express Blue, as was every A1 from 60153 onward and also 60127-129, then repainted in BR Green in 1951/2 along with the entire class. 60163 would never have carried that bland apple green.

I know you are teasing everyone but perhaps you should be saying that at last the A1ST is presenting their loco to the same standard as the Clan Line team always turns her out. (And thanks to Carnforth for giving them the paint finish in the first place that they could build on.)

That said, there are many who would not be happy with that level of unrealistic turn out to which my answer would be "Bahamas, Tornado or whatever - every steam outing in 2020 is a special occasion and what was good enough then is good enough now" :)

What is so special about a gleaming Clan Line, Tornado or Bahamas? We've had Galatea at York all summer and it too has gleamed and sparkled every time it has gone out, thanks to the dedication of York's hard working "Dave Team" who have polished it to an inch of it's life on every occasion. We do shiny engines up north rather well, I think, as do NELPG and Riley's men at Fort William. You do not need to have a prima donna loco to turn it out looking its best.

    Just saying:).

Sorry Peter. That was a tad too defensive a comment. As I said, every steam outing is a special occasion that merits a bit of spit and polish. Wasn't taking sides at all by mentioning just Bahamas and Tornado in a post. There is obviously quite a list of locos that are turned out well and regularly although a handful of locos are always near the top of that list and some are currently locked away in Birmingham.

Much as I do like a little patina of grime, I’m very much of the opinion that a nice clean loco shows that someone cares and shows a bit of pride in the job. It’s very much like myself, I’ve had my scruffs on today for the crappy jobs but tomorrow for when I’m public facing, look nice, look smart.
Although I’m sure 45596, 35028 or 60163 scrub up better with Autoglym than me :p:)

Amen to that - and I'm certainly not going to get into a "My engine is shinier than your engine" debate.

I don't think the Clan Line team would ever dream of presenting their loco with dirty buffers.......

Possibly not. While Doncaster were turning out blue A1s, Darlington were still painting the apple green So who knows
