I just think of it as like the rules for patronising restaurants or cafes. Entering the train and moving about you need a mask, but when seated at the table you don't need one. I personally am quite comfortable with that but obviously everyone is different.

I know people have said that what is happening in most places, but I believe that is not what the law says. You of course spend a lot longer on a tour than in a pub or restaurant.

But on the tour you are with the same people at all times. In a restaurant or pub you could be surrounded by many in just a short space of time.

Also, not everybody is sat at home. Some people are out working and coming into close contact with hundreds of people a week.

Indeed, all true - though the reduced number of contacts is offset by the greater duration of proximity in an enclosed space. But the law doesn't distinguish between the two scenarios, and I like others find it hard to believe that the exemption from mask wearing applies throughout the trip.

It's also strange that some would happily go without a mask anyway in the present circumstances just because they were not being told that they must wear them. Doesn't common sense tell us that it's better to take precautions being safe rather than sorry.

Thank you @RalphW . I was too interested in Il Giro to concentrate properly. Even edited it's not much of a comment but you should now get the gist.

Everyone has there own opinion on masks but do they actually do anything we have been told to wear them now from July/august and infection rates are rapidly growing so it tells me they don’t do anything to protect us just my thoughts on the matter

The majority of people wear them so they can go to shops, or so they can eat and drink in pubs and restaurants without getting any aggro from staff or the law. Then there's the panic stricken who wear them and actually think they're are protected from the virus, you know the ones who wear masks in their own vehicle while being the only one present. The idea of masks are to reduce the chance of you passing on the virus. I don't recall anyone epidemiologists stating that masks give you full protection, though I have heard plenty say they might stop you from spreading it.

Infection rates are rising even though people are wearing masks.......And if they were not, then what would the rate of infection be?

Tricky one, isn't it? Back to Saphos. Even though I've not travelled on a Saphos train during the pandemic for entirely different reasons I'm prepared to guess that the environment on one would be far safer than on a typical service train. Of course the air con dimension introduces a whole new issue that escalates things into the same category as aircraft.

It is really like trying to prove a negative.
Checking for liquids in quantity at an airport security is no way of proving if it has deterred terrorists. Likewise you can not prove if you have stopped any terrorist attack by having strict border controls.
You just have to believe that doing what seems the best thing to do is, until you can scientifically prove it is not.
