    From Unofficial NELPG Group (Facebook)

"Unfortunately the K1’s move from Carnforth to Grosmont scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled as I failed the loco this morning with a fracture on the right hand side of the throat plate. This is surprising as the throat plate was extensively ultrasonically tested when the boiler was out of the frames over the winter of 18/19.
The plan from here is to discuss the principle of repair with our boiler insurance company tomorrow and Tuesday with a view to draining the boiler and removing the boiler cladding adjacent to the affected area on Wednesday and investigating the extent of the fracture by appropriate testing on Thursday. Assuming our insurers agree to the principle of repair, a detailed repair procedure will then have to be agreed before any remedial work can take place.
I will update you further when there is more to report."
Further updates will be posted when the information is available.

That's sad news but the message suggests that it is fixable although not necessarily easily or cheaply.

Would be unfortunate to lose the K1 and the K4.

I don’t think anyone’s said the K1’s not going to work again.

I imagine it's a toss up between repairing the issue now, or withdrawal and commencement of a full overhaul. Bear in mind, 2021 was due to be it's final season before requiring said heavy overhaul. If 2021 feels risky in terms of expecting a full season of running, due to Covid restrictions, it may be worth the early overhaul start to be in a position to resume running when the market is returning.

The last heavy overhaul about 10 years ago (I think) took 2 years. Are we looking at a similar timeframe here?

Didn't know that info. Someone will decide on this but financially, unless it's a quick fix, this may end up as an early overhaul. And given its service on the West Highland, to have that signalled early on gives plenty of time to plan what the motive power needs to be on the Jacobite next year.

As I said, that's sad news but actually a good time for it to happen if it may be out of service for a while or in 2021.

Totally agree that this could have happened at a much worse time, at least she's managed to earn some cash this year.

An official NELPG update on the K1 - and it's good news:

I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, the K1’s move from Carnforth to Grosmont, scheduled for 16th November, was cancelled at the last minute owing to a fracture in the right hand side of the throat plate. This was surprising as the throat plate was extensively ultrasonically tested when the boiler was out of the frames over the winter of 2018/19.

The full extent of the fracture has now been ascertained, and our insurance company have confirmed their agreement, in principle, to carry out a repair. A full specification for the repair and welding procedure is currently being prepared for submission to our insurers and, following their agreement, the repair can be undertaken.

As the loco is to remain at Carnforth until the repair has been completed, this winter’s annual examinations are being brought forward which will improve the loco's availability when it gets to the NYMR (hopefully by mid December).
