A friend of mine is wondering where this photo was taken and if there was some sort of event going by the headcode.
    Any ideas please?
Is it GW going by the footbridge?

The other site is an unknown location totally.

I have a strong suspicion that the second photo is of Bont Newydd station on the Bala-Morfa Mawddach line. The signal box and crossing seem right. The Running in board in the photo certainly ends in -YDD.

Others, including possibly Bryan (@Ploughman) will know the area better than me, but this possibly looks like a Sunday diversion of the Bournemouth Belle (?in the spring of '67), so could this be leaving Alton, heading for Winchester on what is now the Mid-Hants line? In which case the headcode is irrelevant as the Southern Region did not display four figure codes at that time.

Just catching up on this request.

On the disused station, the background of the last two letters on the station name board look like DD to me with possibly a Y before it as has been said already so YDD does rather limit the location to Wales!

On the other image I'm pretty certain that these are Southern Pullmans so as Peter says it has to be the Belle with a Brush in charge. And I agree on Alton. It's a shot taken from Windmill Hill/Turk Street overbridge looking north towards the station. You can just see Lower Turk Street a little further up that goes under the railway. Everything on the left is different now with new build and Sainsbury's but that tower block is still there. Google Earth gives you a green corridor now from the bridge with no views as you head onto the Mid Hants. I was a bit confused by the wrong line working till I remembered that the running line was on the left, as now.

    One little quibble.
To the rear of the train is what looks like a GWR lower quadrant bracket signal. Would that be right?

I'm sure that Nick has enough PW niggles to bug him without the photos adding to his woes.:)

If you look closely at the Alton photo the signal is actually a Southern Railway/Region upper quadrant bracket signal. The Belle is on the Mid Hants line while the other line is the former Meon Valley line which was, I think,by then disused. The section was at one time double line from Alton to nearby Butts Junction but became two single lines sometime in the thirties I believe.

    Had it confirmed elsewhere.
It’s D1686 leaving Alton on 1st May 1966 with the diverted down Bournemouth Belle.

It is a nice sunny summers day. The main line is closed from Basingstoke to Winchester Junction so if I catch a train to Alton I will be able to take a photograph of the pacific on the Bournemouth Belle. At the time the Pines Express was worked by a Brush 4 but as the train did not run on a Sunday it was used by the Southern. Working to Waterloo early on Sunday morning, it then worked the Belle and back to Bournemouth for Monday's Pines .

The line to the right of the train is the Meon Valley Branch to Fareham which was by then out of use. The line on which the train is running is now the Watercress line but some distance after this a branch left to the right to Basingstoke - again long gone.

I'd agree with Peter. If you look at the white part of the post, it is bleached out and looks like a single post, but if you look at the black bit near the ground, you can see it is two separate posts, typical of Southern Railway rail-built signal posts.

Currently the running line is as you say Tom, the other track has a loop with a further siding on the old Meon Valley line. They are known as the Meon loop and the Meon siding for obvious reasons. I believe that in SR and BR days as shown in the OP's pic, the lines were treated as parallel routes, not double track. When the bridge at Butts junction was rebuilt last year, the MHR insisited it was re-instated as double width, as it is a long term aspiration of the railway to rebuild the second track all the way to that point. The brewery building is still there, but plans are now affot to reevelop the site, which has been closed for a good few years now. The signalling in this section is now colour light, installed when the MHR reached Alton in the early 80's, but for the rest it is definitely a green tunnel -see attached
