I believe ‘Tim’ was a nickname bestowed upon Mr Gresley by those close to him from an incident during his younger days.

I think most of our CME’s did what would be called social networking these days even after retirement, let’s not forget in later years Mr Riddles even renamed Britannia himself in his 90’s.

Have had a very positive response and I believe I have nearly all names covered. The manuscript is going to the potential publisher at the end of this week once that’s completed. Exciting times!

I am also doing a two article stint in one of the railways mags on Thompson, and have been helping another writer do the same for a different mag.

It took a little big longer than expected.

    About five years longer actually.

Edward Thompson: Wartime C.M.E. was presented to the potential publisher last night, and initial contact seems very favorable. I will let you all know how it goes in future.

The book came to 102,000 words approx, and 403 pages, of which over a hundred pages was the Use of Engine Power and Availability statistics.

Please forgive me, for I am about to vent.

It is so - incredibly - frustrating, reading some of the absolute nonsense that has been posted on a few social media platforms about Edward Thompson the last few days. I am finding it difficult to contain myself at times!

Does anyone else get this overwhelming indignation about their pet subject when something obviously wrong gets said?

I feel like I've spent the last day holding up various papers and pieces of evidence and going "look at the evidence. EVIDENCE!!!" - but it just gets ignored in favour of the usual tired cliches.

    Anyone else feel like this?

This is why a hardback version of your book is essential, so you (and anyone else) can wallop people over the head with it! :)

It's a microcosm of the sad reality of our times I fear - on the grand scale of everything, is your reaction any different to half of America (and a large chunk of the rest of the world)'s view of Trump's current antics, half of Britain's view of Brexit, the anti-vaxxer's view of vaccines etc etc etc. It's a sad time where bias, emotion or prejudice often trump reality and evidence based arguments.

Although my day job was not in science it did hinge on validated, evidence based judgements, as did my credibility. It soon became clear that for some people this counted for nothing when set alongside completely irrational and unsupported views of the 'yes but' variety. There was no answer to that and you moved on or moved around the problem. It seems the same is true of the story of Thompson as seen by some others.

I drew a similar analogy several years ago, when David Bellamy was absolutely lampooned for his views on climate change. I still say he was absolutely right in what he said, and that the vast majority of people have been hoodwinked by the political agenda which is the climate change lobby.

Wasn't the saying "Publish and be damned"?
Once the book is in print you will have the satisfaction of saying "You are wrong read this tome. It has all the evidence needed to show you are wrong", without you having to identify you yourself are the author if that is preferred. :)
I wouldn't get too upset- there will always be nay-sayers who know no better!
Just be assured that there are those of us that are more open minded and grateful for the research that is done by yourself, and others, to further our knowledge.

I've had a few emails asking for progress on the publication of the book. I have checked in with the publishers periodically since October, but to date no confirmation either way has been received.

We are in lockdown, everyone is busy (I myself am doing the end of my apprenticeship over the next few months) so I beg a little patience on this end.

For anyone who has any burning queries, or would like to see the availability figures/cox report/etc, please drop me a line and I would be happy to answer any queries within reason.
