Thanks for that info. I take it that it is the Crossley Evans site just south of Shipley station. It’s great that you can see it in 3D on Google Earth, although I can only make out two shunters. A quick internet search throws up several articles, blogs, videos, etc. from people who have passed by on the train and glimpsed them in the yard. Someone even appears to have attempted modelling the yard for a club layout!

Surely the first question must be how many scrapyards are still in existence that scrapped BR main line loco or industrial locos.

I often pass the location of Cohen's at Kettering by the A14. Often wonder what was unearthed during the building of the business park built on the site?
It is probable that at many sites that items were buried when grading carried out.
Wasn't a lot of railway crockery dug up from the sludge pits at Cossington?

Why was that, i always thought that Loco's got cut up fairly quickly, as having men idle cost the yards money, plus, from pictures i have seen of Cashmores, the engines were often shunted to the same location to be cut up, so if an semi cut engine is stuck there fore any amount of time, it means cutting has to be done elsewhere in the yard, and that means moving heavy equipment about, and again from what i have seen, the yards tended to separate types of scrap so different metals went in different piles. On average, how long did it generally take from an complete engine being shunted to its cutting point, to the last bit being cut, and the siding being cleared ready for the next engine?

Further afield how many steam locos are still languishing in dumps abroad?

Maybe the date listed means when the tender was detached from loco or the tender was scrapped before the loco met it’s fate. Looking in a book I have regarding scrapping dates of Bulleid light Pacific’s 34087 wasn’t the only loco that was cut up over a period of time.

Over the years I’ve heard lots of stories of railway items or locos parts being dumped in large holes and covered over.

Do you have good cause to believe in any of those stories, and if so what locations are we talking about?

I can remember working at part of Doncaster works, adjacent to the station, and the area where they had dumped our coach (ECJS 377) was littered with LNER brass coach door hinges. Didn't find any loco bits though.

Well the Bluebell found a Macnllyth totem in Imberhorne tip, and 2857’s cylinder block was found under a pile of coal at Briton Ferry, so there’s some truth in it.

Friswells of Banbury are still in business, though as a steel stockholder as opposed to scrap merchants.

There were supposed to be remains of locos at Maden and McKee, Liverpool, into the 1970s, but the only person I know who was at all familiar with the yard cannot remember seeing any at that time.

I've heard rumours of rods being dumped in the pits at Salisbury shed, and the site is still not redeveloped - perhaps someone should organise a dig?

Sounds vaguely plausible as, from my understanding, rods were removed prior to locos being taken for scrapping.
Usually they were dumped in tenders, cabs or tied to the foot plate.
If some were found what condition would they be in?
