At first glance the displacement of the 60 odd Arthurs would require a fair no of something equal or greater than... but like the Jubes and patriots the need to replace these machines was overtaken by events and in Hindsight your questioning is spot on as 5mt's proved capable of deputising for Arthurs, and Bulleids were already doing anything they couldnt do. Remember in the early to mid 50's Steel was in short supply and as a result expensive - scrapped engines could not be so easily replaced however tempting the scrap value might be...

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I seem to recall reading somewhere fairly close that the 5mt's were being double headed on S&D traffic and the rebuilt Bulleid's were too heavy for that route, so the need for another Class 6 engine? I also recollect thinking, in the 50-60's, that steam locomotives were being scrapped to provide the steel to build the diesels and other re-building needs of the country. I was young and naive at the time!
Perhaps it is also naive of me to hope that the question of 'why did this happen?' might go away at sometime, I suppose there will always be folk asking it, about everything that happens.

The interesting part of history is not reading what someone said happened and when , its understanding the back story.

Double heading of 5MTs was not a regular occurrence on the S&D but 4MTs were used as pilots after the LMS 2Ps were withdrawn. The 5MTs handled the same loads as the light Pacifics.

I think that the limiting factor was adhesion rather than boiler output. A Clan would probably not have performed any better than a 5 on the S&D. The only locos that could take heavier loads were the 7Fs and 9Fs

It's always good to read other peoples knowledge of the situations, thank you. I guess the benefit of asking questions is that you gain knowledge, and the more you ask the more you learn. Wonderful. Just what such a forum is good at, even if sometimes the information on threads can be erroneous and biased, never on this thread I am sure.

Merchant Navies were the banned Bulleid Pacifics, but one worked over the line with a Farewell Special.

I've posted a link on the Bulleid Pacifics thread, for fear of further derailing this one... Plenty of nice photos of Flat tops, Standards, Stanier 5s and 8Fs, Mickey Mice, and some GW 2251s...

Hi chaps, can't seem to get on the website. Might be worth checking if it needs another 50p in the cyber-meter?

Sorry about the lack of service. Migrating hosting systems is always a pain. This morning there was a system outage. Unfortunately then the domain "theclanproject.org" got pointed to the new hosting system whereas the migration hadn't been done. I don't know if it was me or someone from the hosting company. We're get the domain name pointer set back to the old host but that takes time to propagate around the internet. There will probably be some disruption later in the week when the web site moves
