Yep ditto that. Left after O level disaster in the 5th. Luckily landed on my feet at the local comp and pulled a few As out of the hat.

The latest "Tornado Telegraph" from the A1SLT (received yesterday) repeats yet again the wording that Tornado "recently achieved 101 mph on the East Coast main line north of York". Recently? They seem to be copying and pasting the old text without reading it.

"You’re right in there being some some discrepancies. Buck managed to overturn the speed restriction on his B1 which is again registered to 75mph. Keeping the post relevant and Tornado maintains its 90mph certificate. Riley’s 5’s have managed to take advantage of the 65 limit whereas others and Halls have yet to climb higher AFAIK."

I believe it was Peter Townend who related the tale of a 9F that achieved 93mph on the ECML which caused the consideration of "an MPH per inch of wheel diameter" rule..... until it was pointed out that this would limit A4s to 80mph.....

101? - Nothing unusual there for a 8P Pacific. And one in (almost) perfect condition as well. Hard to think of one that hasn't!!

A good thrashing never hurt anyone , some people have been known to pay good money to re create their school days, if it contained suitable chastisement ;) mostly from the high end public sector though, then they go into politics, :)

I wasn't commenting on the 101 mph but on the "recently". That run was a few years ago.

So when does Tornado cease to be a "new build" loco? - it is after all hardly new now:).

Define new build? its really an continuation of an existing design after a long break in production, changed and updated to meet modern requirements, :)
As regards doing the ton club, well in the early mainline steam years before they started fitting the various electronic recorders etc, that record speeds, there was certainly a few instances of engines whilst not hitting the magical ton, doing more than the approved speed for steam traction, i can remember the first run after dark on the Bournemouth main line when a certain light pacific on the fast at Fleet , roared out of the darkness, that looked like it was doing close to line speed,it certainly looked faster than 60 , or what ever the limit was then, then theres City of Wells, on the Salisbury Special , that took a 33 up to its maximum to catch it,

It will always be a new build if you define that as any loco that has not been built by one of the railway companies or BR.

As fascinating as are insights into the peccadilloes of certain among our number, I find myself questioning the relevance to Tornado.

Any locomotive built after the abandonment of steam for diesel by the bulk of the UK rail system (so probably Evening Star; March, 1960); or at the very latest, after the formal end of steam haulage on the UK rail system (various dates in August, 1968) is, and always will be, a member of the category of 'new build' locomotives.

I know - hense the:). I was being facetious in response to someone who questioned the "recent" 100mph run saying it was some years ago now. I guess my point went over most peoples head:(. Sorry.

Let's get Tornado in perspective. It's no better or worse than any other 8P, in my view, irrespective of the fact that it's about a dozen years old, although many parts are much newer than that!

What I would concede, and it is a bonus for main line steam in the 21st Century, is that it can be very economical on water, if managed well. That said, it does get many lengthy runs at 75 ish and that helps.
