The Gwili Railway thread

L92 arrives tomorrow so that’s some good news. We are not sure yet when we will be returning to operations, but there is a lot going on, tidy up, laying the south point at Abergwili, work on Moorbarrow and GWR 216 all progressing steadily.

Like many others we were saddened to hear of the situation at Llangollen and we hope that this can be resolved positively.

Update

L92 has arrived in typical Welsh weather...

Meanwhile work continues on Moorbarrow and GWR 216 in the dry, the former having the cab painted and the latter with door repairs.

Vintage carriage update

Taff Vale Railway 220 has joined GWR 216 in the shed now. The initial focus on this coach will be to seal the gutters and remove the springs for contractor overhaul. As you can see lower body panels and doors will also need to be fitted among a host of other jobs.

yes the coach is 130 years old this year...the second photo was taken 30 years ago at the Cathays Open day in 1991.

How do they get away with moving engines around as being essential. What answers do they use as I am not allowed to deliver an model engine to my friends house to be fixed but railways have been allowed to move engines? And what way is up hill on the extension as I am trying g to imagine it not seeing it

 

There are no restrictions with deliveries from a business, in the same way as your amazon parcel comes, a steam loco can come, I guess.

Up hill is towards bronwydd, up the valley.

have just received the latest copy of the Gwili messenger and i wonder if Matt could just fill in a few holes in the P way report regarding the reclaimed track work?
How will the 3 way turnout be utilized at Abergwili and how far will the reclaimed rail extend towards Conwil?

Hi Colin

thanks for this, we plan to use the 3 way point at Abergwili running off the south end of the present loop line to create a “fan” of sidings. Hope the attached picture gives you some idea. The three way is proposed as a “kick back” off the existing turnout heading through the container in the picture. The roads created will form part of the carriage shed and related sidings.

with respect to Conwil it’s a case of accumulating materials, (rail and sleepers). It is approx 1 mile of track required to get us from the end of the present rail head to the north end of Conwil platform and allowing for the two roads though the platform.

so far we have about 1/3 of a mile donated.

Conwil will be a good station. I have been researching it and think this will be a good place to aim for. It will be a nicer place to get off than where it ends at the moment. But I still like where you get off now before someone has a go at me.

 

Hi Matt, just looking at the photos, did 220 make it onto Blue Peter in the early 1990’s? I have a vague memories of a there being a feature of an item of rolling stock that they had in the studio as a kid.

yes it did, it went to London and actually made it into the studio. This was on account of the link with Brynteg Comprehensive school, Bridgend who restored the carriage in the 1980’s.

 

Will they be putting up signals at conwil. My research is showing me it is near the road and on google you can see the platform. Signals will make it obvious is a railway there and may make cars stop to look. Sometimes if a signal is down I have stopped to watch if a train is coming. When a train stops there the cars will get a surprise as it’s close. It is always good when the road goes near as people have something to wave at. This will be an excellent extensions

A crap sat-nav is one pretty reliable way.

 

When you come by in a car and you see the train it will be very very very close. This will make a surprise for anyone that doesn’t know the railway is there or has done an extension. Hopefully people will pull off to have a look or even a ride
