You may wish to look into Colonel Stephens territory. If the good Colonel were still with us, he might be seeking to add Ll*******n to his empire, which already included S********h.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snailbeach_District_Railways

Caledonian Blue might be more appropriate than the S&D version for Drummond locomotives, given that his LSW designs had evolved from his earlier Scottish designs.

Ah, thanks...... Didn't have to read very far before getting the gist of the problems!

If that was 2008 and earlier, it's 8 years prior to me joining this Forum and I can't remember seeing anything in Steam Railway or other magazines about it at the time.

I've never even heard of Snailbeach as a place, let alone having a railway (industrial or otherwise).

I am conscious that aspects of the description given might also be applied to the group with which I was involved (and of which I was effectively the public face) proposing to revive a certain branch line on the Surrey-Sussex borders, although I am happy to say that we rejected advances by both Alf and Stuart to get involved. We might have been daft, but we weren't THAT daft!

Alf I believe is currently residing in one of Her Majesty's care homes.

It's in Shropshire and if you are ever anywhere near, what little remains of the railway lies in the vicinity of the remains of the various lead mines it was built to serve. Unless some serious tidying up has been done since I was last there, it is one of the few places you can see a narrow-gauge railway abandoned to vegetation. The loco shed, however, has been preserved, but sadly, not with any locos in it.

I did PM you yesterday - can you enlighten me as to what went on?

On checking my messenger archives, it appears we did have some interaction with Alf, and he did do a bit of digging for us, both on matters of costs and company/charity law, and over a hacking of our Facebook group by a Bluebell-based group of trolls attacking us (not that we needed any help in being made to look like fools). I did hear some general insinuations about Alf's character, but I never had any problems with him. I viewed him as a largely harmless, naive eccentric, a fellow enthusiast without any specific expertise.

I did also have a number of encounters with a bloke called Steve whose surname was also that of a well-known grocery retailer... a very aggressive chap with a particular interest in the S&D, who wanted to become involved with the Cranleigh proposal, but only if he could be boss and run it his way. Bearing in mind how many people he had pissed off at various sites along the S&D, we ultimately said no. He responded by banning me from every one of his MANY Facebook groups, some of which I hadn't even joined...

PM sent. At the time you were writing about Cranleigh, I’d have agreed but with snarky comments about the credibility he brought; I now regard him as deeply nasty and to be avoided with a long bargepole.
