A 'Dean Single'?! Does every bloody new build suggestion/project need to be a express locomotive?!?!? Can't it be like a mix traffic (or freight) engine for once.

    Edit: And no I don't mean a f#####ing E2 tank....

OTOH, isn’t fifteen Black 5s a bit - well, you know, greedy? At least the GWR mob have the decency to give all their indistinguishable preserved 4-6-0s different names to give someone a fighting chance of telling them apart ... :)

Really? I though by then the imagination of the Dean era had evaporated, leaving to them being given ''handle crank'' names of the Sand Castle, King Kong or Porn Star sort.

Mind you, the other ''Big Four'' companies were scarcely any better.

Apropos nothing much beyond thinking out aloud, this thread seemed as good a place to ask as any ......

Does anyone happen to know what components Mr Wainwright's extant H class 0-4-4T and C class 0-6-0 might have shared with their extinct relative, the J class 0-6-4T? Coupled and trailing wheel diameters are the same as the H, but were they identical? Then https://sremg.org.uk/steam/j(se)class.shtml notes the boiler as 'similar' to that of the C class, whatever that means (!) The cylinder diameter matches neither exactly, being closer to class D and seemingly within a gnat's crotchet of class E.

I think that SREMG page is a bit garbled: for example, I can find nothing to suggest "they were designed by Wainwright to work not just the SECR's own services, but to work any line south of London" - I think the writer misread a line in Bradley: "they were the first of their type [i.e. 0-6-4T] to work south of the Thames". Similarly "The original drawings for the class were for a six-coupled radial tank with a boiler similar to that of the C Class to be called class N" doesn't quite accord either. Instead, the original intention was to have an 0-4-4T with a C class boiler and cylinders and 1600gallon water capacity, but it was vetoed on account of the weight (19ton axle load) as well as only having 1300 gallons of water capacity, at which point the 0-6-4T design was drawn up (as well as an unbuilt 4-6-2T sharing some parts in common). But the boiler is a superheated Belpaire boiler, so not much similarity with a C class by then ...

Looking at the dimensions, I can't see much in common with any other Wainwright design. The cylinders are 1/2" bigger diameter than on an E class 4-4-0, but significantly, had piston valves, not slide valves, so must be completely different castings. The L class had piston valve cylinders but rather bigger. The boiler dimensions (barrel length, firebox heating surface etc) don't match either the E or L classes (which were the other Wainwright loco with a Belpaire fireboxes), being a bit smaller all round than the E and considerably smaller than an L.

So on the face of it, not a lot in common.

If you did want to go down that route, the key starting point is the H class boiler, which was widely used on a variety of former SER and LCDR designs to extend their lives as the original boilers wore out.

Know your LMS Co-Co’s young man! Or D16/1 or later D16/8 or in new money Class 34 under TOPS.
Interesting to think that all 3 members of the class will all be built under different owners, 10000 LMS, 10001 BR, 10002 private ownership.

I think you’d call 10001 an LMS design though surely, regardless of when it actually emerged - no one would call a 1950 Castle or Black 5 a BR design, would they?

I must admit, if 10002 sees the light of day, it is probably the only type of diesel that I might actively want to see: the originals were a handsome design and even with my blinkers on, I think it was clearly a “miss” that one didn’t end up in the NRM.

Yeah it’s splitting hairs regarding heritage, but more importantly you’ve admitted to liking a diesel :) and then saying one should have gone to the NRM! I think a large Brandy is called for! ;):p
