    You are rather making my point - the long survivals were down to exceptional circumstances (for example the Hayling Island bridge, and others). 30 years ownership by the original company for a late Victorian loco was about par for the course; 40 years was not unknown but anything longer was very much the exception and can normally be traced back to some quirk.

    The niche aspect of longevity is pretty universal. From the viewpoint of about 1960 onwards, the LSW T9 class were something special, but rewind to the 1910's and 20's and it looked rather different. T9's were already a bit passé, as a look at the priorities for superheating reveals. By the time the first T9 was superheated (314 in 4/22) the whole of Classes D15 and T14 had been done, along with most of S11, L12 and 700. Even the 1 off M7 (126) was done during the previous year. What saved them was their route availability. In LSW terms this meant West of Exeter, which is where they still made their mark well into BR days. In SR terms this meant working over the SECR lines. If grouping hadn't happened, then what might have happened to them? One way trip to the back of Eastleigh Loco. Works is my guess.

    The LBSCR sold one of Stroudleys C class 0-6-0 tender engines to the Stratford on Avon and Midland Junction Railway, which outlasted all the ones on the native system, all of which went either before, or immediately after the grouping.

    the one sold off then passed to the LMS, who renumbered it into the Midland 0-6-0 series

    The last surviving Stroudley D1 was one sold off to industry. IIRC, it succumbed in 1956.

    Yes, it went to the Whittingham Hospital Railway, near Preston in Lancashire. The reason why they went to the Southern is that, in 1947, their loco failed badly and, at that time, there was a long lead time for a new industrial loco, and they needed something quickly.

    Therefore they wrote off to all four main line companies to ask about any surplus locos being sold off, and the Southern were the only ones who bothered to reply.

    It ran until 1956 then had boiler or firebox trouble. For the final 18 months of operation, it was replaced by an 0-4-0 Sentinel from Bolton Gas Works

    The LNER built some new large 4-4-0s in the 1920s for its Scottish lines - D11/2 "Scottish Directors" and D49 "Shire" classes. That enabled a cascade of existing Scottish 4-4-0s, with some displaced to lesser duties and some going for scrap. The LNER would not have wanted more 1890s-vintage small 4-4-0s - it already had enough! Some ex-GER B12 4-6-0s were sent north in the 1930s to take over principal GNSR-area services.

    Having said that, I do notice from Simon Martin's availability statistics that the surviving GNSR 4-4-0s were among the LNER's most reliable engines during WW2. But they were of course on undemanding secondary duties, and would not have had to run at express speeds with heavy trains, as had been expected from small 4-4-0s on the SECR.

    Having recently read Vallance’s history of the GNSR, I’m not entirely convinced those duties would have been particularly undemanding, even if not as fully stretched as their counterparts in Kent.

    And why not? With so many components standardised there's scarcely an argument for having three more Halls instead of a Saint, a Grange and a County, and I have no doubt that many more folk will visit the SVR to run behind the Lady instead of Ravingham Hall than would have visited to run behind Maindy.

    And heck, if having the full range of classes instead of a subset isn't of some historical interest what the hell is?

    I think you'll find that only 2 Halls, 4942 & 7929, were dismantled for the Saint, Grange and County not 3.

    I had a look on the GWS website but could see no reference to such a fund....which I believe could be a good future new build project. I seem to recall that the Windsor replica was built using an industrial 0-6-0 chassis and boiler?
