I suspect the only people who would know would be (depending on your route) the P2 mob (built a few, are building 2 boilers at once), and the Clan, er, clan (building with heavy external manufacturer usage).

My entirely uninformed guess would be
    1) you'd probably save on castings (re-use of pattern), greater numbers means 1 failure in a batch is a smaller risk
    2) any machining etc will be per unit, so no saving there
    3) specially-made jigs (boiler flanging blocks etc) would be a saving
    4) assembly would only be a saving if done next to each other in a coordinated fashion.
If both were done under the same conditions, and with each side being well-funded, you'd probably get a saving on about half of the works, but as soon as they are built in separate locations to different programmes, you'd only make a saving on items that would have multiple-operation saving (which would seem to be castings and pressings).

What would effect the biggest saving would be an eccentric millionaire willing to bankroll the two projects and then collect funding afterwards

In principal batch building can save money - witness the six new fireboxes for Bulleid Light Pacifics. But the issue is getting up-front commitment to make it worthwhile. Much as I'd like to see one of the 2-6-4T variants, I think the likelihood of recreating any one of the six missing types is vanishingly small.

Though it pains me to agree, I do. :(

Perhaps once the folks over the water have their NCC (Fowleresque) W class mogul done and dusted, someone might want to turn their attention to a 372, or 393, but I honestly doubt that'll be any time soon.

As far as I can tell 850 didn't have that much in common with the Woolwiches, although they no doubt used a few bits and pieces from the unfinished one.

To be totally tangential for a moment, has anyone ever seen a colour photo of 850? It survived into the era where we have colour photos of other CIE locos including quite of few of the 670s but I've never seen one of 850.

I think if there was to be another Irish new build, operational necessity would probably a
suggest a tank loco. CBSCR 4-6-0?

(Meanwhile I reckon the sentiment vote would be for resurrecting GNR VS No. 207 Boyne!)

Get Hornby or Bachman to do one, stick it in their respective catalogue and leave it 5 minutes for Mr Reeder to announce his next project...
