To my mind freights at Galas are part of Galas and each heritage line will decide whether or how to run them. The Swanage Railway will do what it judges is best.

I worked on the railways through the sixties and we had goods depots goods sheds goods yards goods trains and goods locos. Why are people now using the word freight?not very heritage friendly is it.

You make a cogent argument for applying pre-Beeching terminology to heritage operations. I, for one, am happy to stand corrected and will use the term "goods" from now on. Chalk yourself up a 'win', sir! :)

Goods locos like the 8 Freight on the LMS? ;)

I entirely understand where you're coming from though - freight rather than goods is one of my dad's pet hates too.

In like vein, my pet hate is the rash of Initials. M.P.D. is an LMS term, the rest of us were happy with 'Loco.' (Yes, even the broad-gauge mob.) I was still being asked by drivers in the mid-90's for 'Light Engine to Xxx Loco. , please shunter.' What is this rush to initialise everything?

Good point, but I’m also guilty of using the word freight.

Probably because I spend so much time watching the webcam feed from the United States.

The problem with 'Loco' is it can get confusing when the thing pulling the train is also referred to as a 'Loco'...

The one that gets me is people using numeric shed codes. They might have occurred on the LMS, but proper railways referred to such places by name. Where the hell is 10A supposed to be?

I am inclined to agree. Even if you know that code so-and-so was such-and-such a place, that might only have been for a few years, before and after which period the same place had different codes. I don't think 1A, 1B and 1C in my home territory ever changed, but many others did.

Perhaps "consist" also could be dumped. I never heard that until quite recently.

I can tell the difference between: 'Carr Loco.' (Doncaster) which was how it was known until closure a few years ago; and 'the Engine on xxxx' which is how most people have always referred to the lump at the front. My copy (of a copy) of the June 1919 LSWR 'Engine Working Diagrams' (their wording), and (original) of the BR-SR SWD workings in 1964 likewise.
The point about BR Shed Codes is a good one - the only references I have are reprints of IA spotters books for 1948 and 1955 and I am frequently at a loss as to which location is being referred to.

Consist would date from 1974, when TOPS went live nationally. It is the name of a particular Enquiry / Output for every train, and so used a lot on the Big Railway.

The one that gets me is ‘load 6’ or whatever the number is. Where and when did this come from? It was always ‘6 on’ in my day when referring to what was on the drawbar.

Obviously, it is inevitable that "big railway" terminology will be picked up by heritage lines but it would be gratifying if, for example, a 1960s themed line used 1960s language as far as possible. On a forum with many crossovers between the mainline and preserved lines I accept that "consist" is here to stay.
