No I saw that, it was more a general comment and would take this thread off piste, I subscribe to a few magazines on various topics but SR seem to have really struggled with content during the last 12 months, much more than the other publications where the staff have really gone out to find stories, plus the Editor has gone and not been replaced.

 

Once the 50 tonne crane is back in service, fingers crossed! Same goes with the railmotor.

In its favour:
yes, it is a beauty indeed,
it represents a significant episode in British locomotive history.
Against it:
its major significance was Churchward's decision against compounding,
having been built in France (?) for use in England, it does not properly represent either French or English practice.

 

There were also ten identical engines built for Egypt.

No need for apologies IMHO Andrew, as the 1Bo1 sentinel locos alone merit interest in ESR in my books. In fact, I've just worked out what I'm treating myself to as a random unbirthday pezzie.

Sorry, this book is about the locos designed for the Egyptian state railways.
I decided not to cover the wartime locos as that is a whole other story.
But the Egyptian locos are fascinating in their own right.
I would suggest that Hugh Hughes "Middle East Railways" is the best starting point for the wartime locos.

Thanks for the heads-up. If your book has an Egyptian Atlantic on the front-cover, it's certainly a candidate for my bookshelf!

 

Which I have just borrowed from Hampshire Library. The Railway Collection is quite interesting, but some of it only sees daylight when Good Friday falls on a Saturday! This one was last borrowed in 2010!
Very interesting to find out more about the fates of the Adams 'Jumbos'.

There's a rather nice De Glehn type 4-6-0 at Dresden. A Prussian S10, I believe. When I saw it I thought of a Castle, but better looking. (Battle bowler donned, ready for the incoming!)

Not sure if this has been discussed on other threads but I read with interest a recent statement that the new build 5551 Patriot is to replace the original motion parts sourced from lost Jubilees with new, due to inherent risks associated with 'legacy' parts. Am I right in thinking that other mainline legacy locomotives such as Galatea, Leader, Scots Guardsman etc, all run rather well with their original rods and motion?
I quite understand a new build wanting new parts made to known standards and lasting quality but am unsure whether similar risks apply to locos still running with 'old' motion?

A very good point. Lets add Duchess of Sutherland, Lizzie and numerous other locos to that list.

I don't think the problem is 'legacy parts' as such. The quote from the Patriot group says "Following discussions with PRCLT we have decided that using the legacy motion parts obtained for 5551 could have a hidden risk of failure. One of the radius rods has a previous repair that has weakened the part to the point of being unsuitable for further use. We will therefore be sourcing 2 new outside combination levers, 1 union link & 2 outside radius rods."
I would read that quote as saying that a flaw has been found with one of the legacy parts and therefore to be on the safe side and avoid detailed examination/testing/machining/reworking of the parts it has been determined as being a cheaper (and possibly easier to certify) option to go for new. With a brand new loco I can see why that option would make sense.

 

I think fair points @ghost although I wasn't clear whether the group had decided that the 'legacy' coupling and connecting rod(s) from ex-Jubilees to be good for use?

 

If this proposal (reported in 'The Scotsman') grows legs, the tragic loss of Ben Alder in the sixties could be, if not rectified (which is impossible without a functioning TARDIS), then at least mitigated.

I wonder, is the idea of a 'Small Ben', a Scottish loco, to be built in Scotland, sufficiently attractive to garner the support it will need? Looking at A1SLT projects as a benchmark, the £7 million price tag quoted seems a bit on the steep side, but perhaps not so much when taken over the whole 10 year timescale mentioned for design and construction.
