The improvements will mean an increase of visitors on Thursdays and Sundays.
Ideally signage and safe parking provision will be improved. Also notices to ensure no walking on neighbours land to protect privacy.
Hopefully will not be long till the viaduct is open for supervised walks along it (as shown on Ch5 and Yesterday TV)?

Not sure how you keep the local authorities on-side through submitting unnecessary planning applications that they then have to send back to you as not needed...?

    Wednesdays and Sundays :)

Do not forget that the viaduct is still owned by the relevant Gov department. Whilst TV shows may well get special treatment, I doubt that the same would be extended to the Trust other than perhaps on very rare occasions, as otherwise they are more likely to insist that the Trust takes over ownership - nice in theory, but financially very unwise at the moment :-( I think you may well have to await Phase 3......

...which is why one would ask them first "do I need PP for this or not please?" After all, I'm sure no-one in the Trust would want to spend time, effort and money in drafting a PP application if it were not needed anyway.

At the moment tho' no one on here seems to have the answer to the basic Q of how much, if any, track-laying could take place without needing PP. Without that info, all the rest is mere speculcation.

Which is the point I was sort of making. Contact the authorities and ask do we need to apply/re-apply. Do you have any objections to our plan etc.....

I suspect what is important at this juncture is the level of informal contact and relationship with elected members, rather than formal contact with officers.

Yup Tom, keep it informal at the moment. Rather like the late Major Olver at the H.M.R.I.. He was quite happy if you came along and asked his advise/picked his brains on a particular issue. Then if needs be take things further and make them formal.

I would suggest that it is the officers, and not the elected members, who would make the decision as to whether or not it was necessary to seek PP. I'm sure an informal approach to them would not be a problem, after all it might well save them time further down the line (no pun intended!).

Thanks for the correction on open days.
There is political pressure on Highways England to cut support costs by demolishing structures. Hopefully they will support the viaduct maintenance till the Trust is ready to take it on.

As I understand it, the guy who is doing all the work with the signals had planned for a matching pair, (the other is still on tressels) up and down starters to be erected and linked to the signal cabin so that visitors could work them, I believe he had more than two sets of spectacle plates, finials and metalwork made up initially and that the idea was to create a set of replica evans o'donnell signals at Chelfham, what will actually happen remains to be seen

Thanks again Meatman (and others) for your detailed and prompt replies. I, and I'm sure many others in these constrained times, appreciate being kept up to date and getting our L & B "Fix" satisfied! :Updated:

Why not ask EA officials if they asked about PP for the track at Snapper? Then you mayn't even have to bother the officers...
Also did the Trust ask about PP for the track and wagons already at Chelfham? If not, then I'd guess no need to ask if you're adding a bit more.

Not a bad idea, but the answer may be dependent upon what the current PP conditions are for Chelfham, so it would require NDC advice just to be sure.

Now that Isaac's left, how many working engines does the L&B have? Is Axe currently a runner?

As of today, the state of the railway's steam engines is as follows.....
    • LYN (A new-build of the former L&BR Baldwin 2-4-2T No. 472, built-in 2017 by Alan Keef Ltd, Ross-on-Wye): is in working order and available for daily service;
    • AXE (Kerr, Stuart & Co Ltd No. 2451 of 1915, 0-6-0T): passed its recent 10-year boiler certification and is again available for service, but currently does have a minor problem with its motion which awaits workshop attention; and
    • CHARLES WYTOCK (Bagnall No. 2891 of 1945 4-4-0T side tank): is currently out of service undergoing a major rebuild. It is hoped that the locomotive will return to service later this year.

Axe is undergoing routine maintenance and is hoped to be in service by start of next month to supplement Lyn on the more intensive timetable.

Cool. It's a shame Isaac didn't stay on the L&B but it's a pretty nice fleet of steam engines.

I'm not sure I would say they are under construction just yet. As I understand it, some castings have been ordered, but there is no current machining/assembly/construction taking place. Give it a year or so and hopefully your statement will be correct!
