I sure if you agreed to fund the cost of the repaint some accommodation could be reached

    Cheers

It will be repainted in Green which is its original colour when in colliery service. Colour is of course always a subject for lively debate and many people liked the S&DJR lettering and Prussian Blue (including me), but its not authentic so this time around it will change to original. But of course in the future it could change back again.

However there is a chance (I've had this conversation with MHR) that because when they took Kilmersdon apart they didn't damage the paint work, that it could appear from overhaul in Prussian Blue for a short while before a repaint to Green. That way anybody wanting to visit and photograph it in Prussian Blue can, and then return a month or so later and get a matching photo in Green, especially if its parked in the same spot both times !

Presumably in green it will make a pretty decent Percy, so you can see the logic.

That was the plan, to overhaul it for use as Percy amongst other things but the press release specifically mentioned it.

Can they get away with that though? They had a wagon that said S C RUFF and got told it was a no, not to be used from what I can remember.

Just to echo those comments. Whether the MHR will be able to release either the 7F or Kilmersdon back to the WSR on a temporary basis will be for the MHR and Trust to decide. Given that both these locos are a plus for the MHR it may be that the WSR will have to stand in line on this one. The fact that the S&DRT is even considering that option says much about their professionalism in spite of what happened to them.

They don’t need to get away with it. It will be a licensed character for their events, same as Thomas, Duck & Diesel.

Yes, it was a part of the decision for going Green, we also want to hire it out in cooperation with MHR so it was felt Green as an industrial would make it more attractive to industrial sized railways who have a use for that sized of engine, it hopefully also leads to photo opportunities in an original colour and a number of other things which all lead toward going Green this time around. As the S&DRT looking forward we have to make ourselves and our assets more accessible, available for more people to enjoy and of course ensure we generate funds for the Trust so we can survive and move forward. Therefore the Green decision is only a small part of us and the collection being more relevant for the future as the heritage rail industry changes around us all.

A part of this is also the collection being more accessible, if you look at the Blog link above you will see photos of parts of the collection which many haven't seen for many years, and indeed since joining I've been pleasantly surprised at how much stuff there is tucked away which when put together can make some really good displays, that includes the Midford Box, Burnham Box, a couple of Whittaker Token Exchangers, a lot of signals and track, a set of recovery equipment from Templecombe, a near full workshop display of equipment, more signs and station boards than you can count, thousands of photos, 3 locos with S&D Connections, coaches, wagons, etc. etc. etc. the list goes on. Its a pity the WSR doesn't want us there any longer, but that's their decision, its made and supported by the Stakeholders, so we can be adult about it and forge a new future rather than sit and feel sorry for ourselves.

So Green is just the start, please book your tickets for Thomas or a demo industrial goods train (or both) at the MHR for next year. :)

I Wouldn't bet on the WSR being there long term, its only a case of when, not if they follow Llangollen, into bankruptcy, Being evicted might just have been a blessing in disguise now your able to make longer term plans, and look to a new era, Kilmersdon will most likily go out on hire along with Thomas as percy , once overhauled, and become the Ropley pet when he's not, " got a shunt today Matt, What shall we use ? the 08? Na steam up the pet, its more fun ":)

I understand if you do not wish to answer this, but is Kilmersdon's overhaul being paid for by the Trust or the MHR? Just wondering if the Trust has had a change of policy after the situation with 53808?

It’s a fair question and as you say relevant given 53808. The S&DRT has the funds available due to prior ring fenced saving for it and is going to pay for the overhaul. However it would also be fair to add that a careful business plan for its future use between the S&DRT and the MHR allowed us to work together to ensure both a fast overhaul and a price both parties can sustain.

Without going into too much detail the MHR will be paying steaming fees once overhauled, which allows a revenue to keep Kilmersdon going toward and beyond the next overhaul, so securing its future and meeting the S&DRT’s Objectives which includes us ultimately having the say over our engine. The MHR will get the part/major use of an engine to widen their portfolio (and hence revenue) in a number of areas without a major upfront cost and benefit from another attraction for people to come and see. MHR will also be a good base and have Kilmersdon as a ‘shed pet’ (to use martin1656’s phrase above) to keep it well looked after.

This way both parties benefit from the relationship, Thomas and all. It’s been all about building a partnership and different thinking with both parties playing to their strengths and trying to find a win/win for both in terms of use, exposure and revenue.

Overhauling an Pecket isnt as expensive as it's likily to be when 53808 is due, as clearly an appeal will be needed to raise funds for the 7f, when it's overhaul comes due, But at least , with the Management of the MHR, your dealing with honest people who don't go back on agreements.

Many thanks for your reply Andy. It's good to know that the lessons of 53808 have been learnt and applied in a way that benefits the trust and the MHR. Good luck with the overhaul.

And as regards 53808, Hopefully its a case of once bitten, and she also has a secure future, and the trust can continue to plan and expand its mission with the full assistance of the new partners it now has, She hopefully will have a permanent home as a valued part of the MHR fleet, whilst it may not be home S&D territory, the Hampshire Alps, are a very good substitute , At the gala last year, she looked right at home, hopefully some time once things return to normal she will get roistered on the demonstration freight hauling a decent length rake .

Too bad the WSR found itself unable to avail itself of this thinking. Oh well, as @martin1656 said, in the long run, being kicked out of Washford may well turn out to have been a blessing in disguise. (I'd still love to know what was really behind the WSR's decision.) Speaking of the SDRT, I need to get organized and renew... :)

    Strictly speaking, no :)

    1. The S&DJR used Whitaker's apparatus for tablet not tokens. (The GWR used a modified version for tokens on their Barnstaple and Minehead branches. The incompatibility between the two was one of the reasons why the Bath Jcn - Midford ETT section was never replaced by EKT by BR(WR).)
    2. The 'exchangers' combined the 'deliverer' and the 'receiver' on a single post - both examples held by the S&DRT are 'deliverers' only.
    3. The example which used to be in the yard was a normal tablet 'deliverer'. The one which was stored in the Burnham box was the 1927 'special' for the Bank Engine staff at Binegar.

Incidentally, AFAIK sadly none of the 'falling man' type survived.
