    Noticed this on WNXX

    https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:S00619/2021-06-17/detailed

On Thursday there is an attempt at a sub four hour run and perhaps to beat the APT record of of 3 hours 52 mins 45 secs.

Apparently a charity run to raise money for two charities - Railway Benefit Fund and Action for Children - but also increase the awareness of the benefit of an electric railway in a climate crisis.

One to keep an eye on via RTT

I note that it is in the schedule for two consecutive Thursdays - presumably the second is a reserve date?

If it's to raise money for charity they must have been selling tickets. Were they advertised?

The reports I've seen suggest that, however this has been done, it has been done very much on the QT.

I would not be surprised, must be a lot of signals and points that may not be playing ball on the chosen day, not to mention the OHLE or the temperature.

I see that today's run has navigated the tricky bit of the southern end of the WCML ok and is on time heading over Shap. Only a few more problematic junctions to pass.

Timetabled for 3h53 with a hope it would pick up time on the northern end.

RTT/Trust shows it passed Gretna 30s ahead of time after a 1 minute early start from Euston.

I'd point out the APT had a five minute signal stand at Stafford. What speed did it reach?

Looks like it was outside of the APT time by about a minute. So no advance in 36 years even with track upgrading such as at Rugby. Arguably it doesn't matter but it's interesting nevertheless.

On the flip side I believe a Pendolino can only do c.128mph before safety devices kick in, the APT was less constrained (I have seen suggestions it hit 138mph on its record run).

Looks from RTT as if the very last mile might have cost them. No TPWS in the days of APT I guess.

Just need to run 0.2 mph faster and rock up outside Central 24 seconds earlier!
