Open Day on 26 June is cancelled.

We had planned to hold an open day at CTL Seal on 26th June. Unfortunately, due to the government not releasing the final tier of COVID restrictions, we will be unable to go ahead. The open day was always subject to the relaxation of the COVID restrictions.

We are sorry that this is the case, as we had been working towards this event for some weeks and were looking forward to being able to show you all the progress that had been made with the construction of 72010 HENGIST, as well as some of the many parts in the assembly hall, principally for the front bogie, with a small selection of items for the tender which have already been manufactured.

It is difficult to make any decisions about a new date at this point in time. We will try to schedule a new date once the situation becomes clearer. This week we had a visit to Loughborough to view 70013 which is under overhaul. With many thanks to the Loughborough team, we have made a number of visits as we can see how things go together. One of the main purposes of this visit was to measure the cross frame reverser shaft - we don't have a drawing for this component. Here's a picture of the team measuring the shaft.

    [QUOTE="

The Standard Class 6 weighed 88.5 tons and was first built in 1951. For that locomotive weight, in the light of the lessons of the 1920s and 30s when it came to locomotive design, what sustained power output should have been expected?[/QUOTE]

Probably a little more than they actually got - and its not the right time to rake up the 'is 250psi such a good idea' fire again.

Wish i was as dab a hand as hermod at the ' identikit loco ' graphics but i am not convinced that a Clan as a 4-8-0 would have been a wide firebox on 5ft drivers - Suspect you would be looking at Royal Scot Taper boiler/firebox on 5ft 8 drivers, 2 x 19" cylinders. All parts of the LMS /Standard loco parts kit already available...

In happier new-build wheel news, I see from the website that the clan lot are starting to machine their bogie wheels

I have just received my July Steam Railway mag. and see our progress report is amongst 'The Roster' which covers 'Overhauls, restorations and running notes' - which category does Hengist fit? :Hilarious:

Sadly, I see that they have entitled the in-depth article on 'Clan Line' "Last 'Clan' standing". What a disgrace, there is a PROPER Clan being built at Sheffield and they should know it.:Hissyfit: It is bad enough having confusion on eBay but in The World's Biggest Steam Magazine there is no excuse.
I feel an annoyed reader email coming out of my fingertips. :Grumpy:

Tell 'em you're going to name yours after the Lynes "The surname Lyne was first found in Perthshire where Sir Roger de Lyon settled in Scotland in 1098 and called the lands there Glen Lyon"

    Clan Lyne anyone?

I’ve pretty much given up on the Beano, it’s had little of interest to me for months now. Unless you’re darn sarf and love Terriers and the IOW it’s largely irrelevant, and its writers seem to be taking to the life rafts. I’ve just bought Trackside, which at first glance seems to be a much better offer, with a good crew already onboard, and a higher quality of presentation too. If issue two is as good, then decades of SR subscription will hit the buffers. Sadly though, nothing can bring back Mike Notley.

I must agree with you Sheff. When I can brave-it to the big shops I'll look out for Trackside and others to see what is better for me.

    Just a quick comment here.

We do have a write up in the second issue of Trackside Magazine in the "Running Lines" section, part on page 85 and part on page 86. While only a few column inches, it is the first time I have contacted them with a press release, and they were extremely pleased to receive it. They did not use any of the photographs that I sent, although they did ask for an enlarged version of one of them, which I supplied. I presume there was insufficient space in this crowded publication to fit it in. So be it - better luck next time.

The second issue was published on 16th July, which is where you will find the write up described above.

Soon be time to start on the next one, as I usually try to send items out during the first week of the month.

    Creative thinking cap required...

Sorry, is our loco named Clan Line or not?

    Did I miss something here?

With apologies to Hengist and those not happy - but the clue is in the title and the name of the loco.

    Best wishes!

What is being built at Sheffield is a B.R. Standard 6 MT 4-6-2 locomotive. The word "CLAN" is just a nickname.

In the same way as 'Britannia's' and others are, I agree, but should it be renamed as 'Hengist Project' to counter that confusion? '6MT Project' does not have the same ring to it, or does it?
Having found Trackside at the nearest WHS, I am pleased to still have articles to read after 3 days. SR took about 3/4 day last time.
I think my previously mentioned problems with it sum up the care and knowledge which seems to have been lost lately, a shame.
Good to see our Patron has visited the works, no doubt he checked Sandringham at the same visit.

https://www.theclanproject.org/Clan_News.php Latest news update shows that whilst the project is raising funds for work to continue and parts made, our busy work team is ensuring that the footplate crew are well provided for!
