A post along the lines "FS clearly wasn't in top form on the way back from Carlisle: I wonder what was wrong" would be fine. A post suggesting a possible cause might be reasonable, depending on the plausibility of the suggested cause. A post suggesting that the people responsible for maintaining the loco might not be doing a good job does not seem appropriate.

Don’t know much about flying a drone but I don’t think you are allowed to fly one like this :(

I would imagine that people who may have been videoing Flying Scotsman around the Ribblehead area really appreciated listening to that racket spoilimg their efforts!!

Not sure if the drone is breaking any rules but that soundtrack is appalling......

Don't be silly, you don't 'throw the towel in' just because of a difference of opinion.

Whilst not wanting to descend into speculation, what's happening in the video as she runs into Kirkby Stephen for a blow up. There appears to be steam escaping from the top of the boiler, in GWR parlance it would be described as the safety valves (if that is the source) feathering, but obviously that would not be the case if she was short of pressure as she obviously was when pausing to get pressure up. Could something not seating be preventing the boiler reaching pressure whatever the efforts of the man on the shovel.

It only looks like only a little wisp of steam so its unlikely to make much of a difference - safety valves not seating completely is my guess . . . if the safety-valves where leaking considerably volumes of steam you would see a high velocity plume of steam even with low boiler pressures (ie. below the level sufficient to keep the brakes off) and as your not seeing such, the small leakage you're referring to can be ignored IMHO.

Here is another bit I am wondering if the smokebox door has warped and is letting in air. 6024 struggled with similar steaming problems in 1998 when she visited the S & C. IIRC the problem was found to be a combination of poor coal and a warped smokebox door.

Please don't. We mustn't get sensitive about differences of opinion or tactless replies on a Forum, or it descends into useless soapbox/echo chamber!

Thanks for your nice comment .I am a one finger slow typist ,my computer skills (or lack of them )have all been self taught ,my command of the English language is no where near people that have been to university ,I left school at 14 and 11 months ,if you were not doing well at English all you got was a clip round the ear. I cannot ,and don't want to, have conversations with members who have the skills I 've just mentioned ,which I have no hope of replying too sensibly. Many thanks to members who supply late info on Railtours and gala's .Some times it has saved me a long trip for nothing, I should have thanked them before. Any- how I'm of to see Tornado tomorrow ,its running over the Northampton loop in both directions, for a change its very local for me, only a 30 to 45 mins drive from home.

In the latest Trackside magazine, they have spoken to Ian Riley re: 60103 steaming issues and he blames the current batch of Russian coal. He said the fuel burned well when the engine was worked hard " but when you are in and out of loops, stops-start, the fire sets like a pudding".

If anyone had any doubts over steaming issues ie. 6115's stop at Ais Gill for a blow up, 35018's erratic performances etc. Here is the proof...

Are you sure? neither of those quoted involved many stop starts yet the last Chester Dalesman with Scots Guardsman came back over Shap with two loops and the performance after both stops was in no way sluggish.

I think 20th May is the reference to 46115 here, where it stopped on the southbound just before the summit. As I understand it, that incident was not related to the coal though.

In that caseI would be delighted to hear the cause of the stop and blow up at Ais Gill..

Not sure why you bring Ian Riley into it, agreed that he says that the loco needs to work to keep the fire at its best but since the two incidents quoted were not stop-start trips, it's irrelevant.
