2021 Jacobite

Thanks for clearing that up James. My mistake, just a shame about the position of the top lamp bracket, the headboard just doesn’t look right!

 

The lamp bracket on 5212 has remained where it is since BR moved it in the 60s! Same with 8151 (although a top one was added on the handrail) and 70013.

44871's was moved back to the top, at some stage, which is why it is difficult to get a train reporting board (especially my original 1T57) to sit properly.

Oh poo! I'd booked a week in Fort Bill to coincide with the K1's last rostered week on the Jacobite. Black 5s it is then.

 

I know for the 2019 season it had an upper lamp bracket too as seen here with the headboard in the conventional position

 

keep your fingers crossed one of them isn't 5212 with the naff headboard position

 

I'll settle for any headboard position if the loco is facing out of Mallaig.

 

It isn't, that's 4871, lets hope they are a bit slow in getting the turntable working

 

John, I think that your "naff headboard position" is the result of the loco being owned by the KWVR (it is only operated and maintained by Ian Riley) and they requested that it keeps the lamp brackets in the position that it had when withdrawn. You have a rare photo there as the bracket below the chimney did not last very long before it was removed.

Any update on the turntable situation? I must say though it is nice to see 44871 smokebox first out of Mallaig.

 

I think it was only for the 2019 season. Was it an extra lamp bracket or a temporary affair attached to the handrail as the MNA did with the home made Belfast Boat Express headboard back in 68?

 

As a result of a mention of the latter day signals at Mallaig in the S&D Railway Trust thread (of all places!) I revisited photos I took on my first visit to Mallaig in August '76 and thought this
comparison between then and now may be of interest.


27014 waits to depart with the 14.00 train to Glasgow, 23/8/76.


Fourty five years later on 25/6/21 this is the same view with Scotrail's 1601 service to Glasgow in the up platform while 44871 waits in the down platform to follow with the 16.55 Jacobite service.

I'm not sure but it did not last the the whole season as it had been removed by the time I saw it in the September.

I'm not up there until late September so if you could sabotage the turntable, that will be very handy.

 

I full story of that headboard was told in the MNA books. It was made by one of them who asked the fireman to take off the engine at the end of the journey so he could recover it for next time

 

Was the story of the 'End of Steam' board told in the book?
It was taken off and slung on the track at Manchester Victoria by a well known gricer who took exception to it being worn!

I didn’t know that. I travelled on it a few times, it was full of enthusiasts. I believe the survivors of regulars, who called themselves the 20.55 Club, still meet up every year
