Hmm. My PLY-NTA was 37m 59.01s but I time to the position of mp214, past the canopy at the east end of the station. RTT showed 38 mins.

That is indeed quick for 10 coaches. When Clan Line did it in similar rail conditions in 2018 it ran to PLY from a standing start at EXD in 62.21 but was two minutes slower from PLY to NTA on the return because of a slower climb.

That must have put the net time for Tornado to EXD (had it stopped) at about 60 min dead.

Agree with that. Got 40m 01.16s for 35028 on 17th June 2018. Being behind the stopper from Dawlish ruined our PLY-EXD time. Ended up as 63m 10.26s to station pass.

Isn't quoting time to 0.01 of a second OTT, apart from the fact that two timers on the same journey would be hard pushed to agree on a tenth.
Some years ago I was involved in motor sport timing and anything less than a tenth was only accepted with breaking the beam timing, not passing a glimpsed mile post or even deciding when your train has actually come to a stop.

And we all know that if you are seated in a coach on the outside of a curve rather than on the inside you can get a faster GPS speed....

Your point other than being pedantic? The stopwatch displays the time, I record it. It displays to a 100th of a second. Might just as well quote it as round it.

So you would record 1000th if it displayed it?

The account from 1020 Shireman was extremely interesting and well written. I thank him for taking the time to write it and pass it on.

Somehow we now have a pointless discussion about fractions of a second.

    Just let it drop. <BJ>

Give it a rest Ralph. 1020 Shireman's report made interesting reading and I thank him for it. As for quoting times accurate to 1/10th of a second, it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Thanks for the kind comments but it's a thing with Ralph. Far from the first time he's had a pop at me. And what a childish follow up. Funny he made no response to the post from No.7:

Very fine run by Tornado yesterday, 4th fastest climb in preservation of Dainton Eastbound, easily the fastest with load 10 (4m 0.67 sec) and 2nd fastest from passing Exeter to Whiteball (17 m 15.6 sec).
    Load 10/363/386
Thanks to all who made it happen.

It actually bothered me for about 0.001 secs.

    The measured sections are:
Dainton Eastbound: MP215- Eastern Portal of Dainton Tunnel.
    Rattery/Tigley: MP223 - MP227.5
    Hemerdon: MP242.5 - MP238.5
Dainton Westbound: MP221.5 - Western portal of Dainton Tunnel.

The list originated from the late Mike Notley and is maintained by myself and Bill Long.

On Dainton Eastbound the top three runs are separated by just 1.5 seconds, with 60163 just 1.67 seconds slower in 4th. The third placed trip was 34067 with a light weight 8 coach train of only 290 tons gross, 96 tons less than Tornado had behind the tender (and 60 tons less that 6024 in second). The pervious fastest with 10 coaches was 6233 on 12/10/02 with a time of 4 min 14.86 (recorded by Mike Notley).

Thanks Nigel. Good to know for the future. Mike did tell me once and I scribbled the details on the back of a brochure once in a pub in Plymouth. Needless to say can't remember which. Can't remember why we didn't do the 12th October 2002 run with the Duchess. We normally did the South Devon Banks back then wherever they originated. The list couldn't be in better hands.

E-ticket received for Sunday's trip with Bahamas. 7 passenger coaches A-G, so 8 in total with the support coach. Should be fine for a Jubilee over the Devon Banks I'd have thought. I'll be in the buffet coach, coach E.

Could it be 10? The kitchen I assume doesn't get allocated a number and isn't the WCRC brake coach (BSK) only for railtour staff on WCRC rakes?

Can't imagine it will be more than 9 with Kitchen Car. That's a Class 7/8 load over the banks as it is. Of late the compartments in the brake have been used for passengers.

Even if the brake is not specifically designated for passengers it usually is included in the lettering, and as you assume the kitchen isn't.

Bit of a coup if you buy a standard ticket and get allocated a compartment!
