Regarding the Black 5, this engine was originally purchased as a replacement for the Standard 5, 73096, because it was assumed once the loan period was up, she would move on, as she did, no one ever thought that 96 would ever return, but it did, So what to do with the Black 5, keep it of course, its an ideal engine for the line, and a very economic engine, now that 53808 has take up residence, it even adds to the S&D image, the black 5's often worked over the S&D to Bournemouth, and some even from there worked trains to Waterloo,as they were available, if there was a failure with a booked engine .

Since the thread has moved on to MHR locos again. Anyone know what’s happening with 34105 Swanage. I’ve got the latest issue of MHR News and there isn’t any updates on the loco.

    Thanks

Still under overhaul, boiler was in the boiler shop when i was down there last October, chassis has been reclad with new cladding, and was in the head shunt by the bridge .

Funny enough I was thinking the same thing. The part overhauled boiler was outside down the headshunt when I last visited along with the chassis. I can understand that with the deal that has enabled 34007 to move up the overhaul queue 34105 perhaps isn't such a high priority at the moment.
There is also the possibility I suppose that once 35005 has been outshopped 34105 may slot in alongside 34007 to complete her overhaul and there could be some sense in this approach. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I was training (no pun intended yesterday) and saw out of the window 4612 passing up the Avenue. The trainees seemed quite interested! My colleagues assured me that Thomas returned today too, although I missed that myself.

I heard of news about 34105 from an unofficial source which I'm hoping will be untrue. This source said that there been some concern about the ownership of the locomotive again. The Railway doesn't want to spend money on a overhaul of an engine which may then move on as soon as they finished it. So currently the overhaul has been suspended indefinitely. This would explain why in the video about 35005 and the other Bulleids on the official YouTube video while there was a fair bit 35005, and some details on 34007 and 34058, there was barley a mention on 34105...

Sad news if correct. Hopefully the situation can be sorted out. I know many on the MHR would be very sad to see her leave.

Another week, another working party atop the hill yesterday, though somewhat depleted, with one giving the lame excuse of a day trip out with his Mrs, another having the temerity to go on holiday & one giving no reason....... don't they realise we have a gunpowder van to finish?!!!

    So, on to said vehicle.......

Upon opening up the doors, it was discovered that the dollop applied to the floor was still going off, so no working on or from the inside.

With three of us in attendance, resources were split three ways - one bringing the wheels spokes & hubs up to scratch - he got the job beacuse he's young, small, agile & lithe -its not a job for a big aging creaking lump!!!:Saywhat:

The next task was to start fitting the cladding to frames #1&2, which was not as straight forward as you'd like to think, but after a discussion as how bwst to proceed, the the job was cracked on with.

The final job for the day was to sort out the headstocks, as there's been rust grinning from under the paint for a while now & its something I've been unhappy with for a long time & yesterday was the ideal time to do it! ;)

The use of an angle grinder with wire brush attachment was definitely the order of the day, given the multitude of paint layers, this is probably the 1st time in eons that anyone has taken the paint this far back! - they didn't stand a chance, except for the indents in the step plates, that ennded up being a flat head driver & hammer job, which actually turned out to be best the best solution, as I think I also discovered & remedied the cause of the rust - the layers of paint applied over the years between the securing nuts on the bolts & headstocks had become one on both sides of each one & any crack in the paint would lead to rusting happening - now hopefully that is in the past........:Nailbiting: as water will now flow freely between headstock & nuts!

By the end of play that was literally stopped by the heavens opening at 16:00, three out of four wheels had been done, one doorframe had been clad , caulked & bought up to 1st undercoat, with the 2nd all but clad, save a few stubborn screws that simply refuse to go home! :Banghead: :Banghead: :Banghead:

Also all four headstocks had been attended to & bought up to 1st undercoat, along with the coupling links, which was something we'd been toying with & as I has the paintbrush out, it was a case of why not!!! :)

Our only worry is, that hopefully the undercoat had gone off enough before the wet stuff fell out the sky, we shall find that out next week....... :Nailbiting: Hopefully, given the latent heat stored in the wood & metal, things 'should' be OK..... it not its back to square one!!!! :Arghh:

Oh, I almost forgot, which would be rather remiss & rude of me - @flying scotsman123 , Alex, your van looks so much better than when we saw it, have we spurred you on to get it sorted?...... :Shifty:

Was nice to see the trains well loaded yesterday, with lots of happy faces, both on the trains & footplates! :)

If my memory serves me right, the engine was purchased by the light pacific group, a group of members of the railway at the time, Again, it dates back to a certain former loco superintendent, and its possible that there is no official register of who owns what shares, its also possible that some might even have passed away, but looking at who was around at the time, clearly its the right decision hopefully enough shareholders can be found, and hopefully the MHRPS can now have full ownership of her, at the time of the upheaval, i know that there were a lot of shareholders that couldn't be traced, and the MHRPS took ownership of it by virtue of those who could be traced gifting their shares to the society .
