These photos do exemplify rather well what I was trying to say in my post no. 287 - and 10 years earlier it would have been even more striking!

Is it not the case that land disposals in prime city center locations are just too tempting for Whitehall, who ultimately control NR's budget...?

Thanks for posting that Peter. A depressing sight but the positive has to be that the land will be re-used rather than becoming yet another eyesore underlining the contraction of freight handling by rail, especially now the decisions of concentration on bulk traffic made in the 60s have largely run their course as far as coal and oil are concerned.
Will there be any scope for the NRM to recover rail access to the south yard or is this a repeat of the isolation of the Manchester museum by the Ordsall curve ?

The tender gangway top looks very odd to me - and so does the lack of tender buffers! v In the front 3/4 view the disparity in height between cab and tender roofs looks odd too. Will they settle by differing amounts when loaded with coal and water?

It certainly looks good - but it does seem to have at least one tender buffer! I suspect the camera lens and angle of shot is making some "lines" look odd?

Ride height is somewhat adjustable - it’s possible the loco hasn’t been weighed and the suspension adjusted yet, though I’d imagine it will have to take place before any mainline move.

I think the loco and tender are on a curve so the 'throw-over' has moved the cab back (or sideways) relative to the tender.

Shouldnt it just be ' N.E.' for that livery ? , or is this just a bit of fun with undercoat...

Actually this is a legitimate livery. Plain Gill sans lettering with LNER and number in cream/yellow used when shaded transfers were not available during the war, and immediate post second world war period, until a repaint into garter blue with stainless steel letters beckoned (for the A4s).

Nothing wrong with the rear of the tender - the buffers are there as they should be. Only the buckeye coupler is yet to be fitted. IMG_0683 copy.jpg
I understand that this is a correct wartime livery for 4498 - the raised chrome lettering was retained and just painted yellow, but I would stress that I'm no expert in this and others may know differently.

Did LNER corridor tenders have buckeye couplings originally, or is that a preservation-era modification?

Original fit. Pullman gangways require them to work properly, really, although emergency coupling options are available. The couplings themselves have generally been updated to current pattern couplers with lower shelf brackets for main line use on the preserved tenders though.

The wide angle lens is extending the tender, to the extent that if you shoved a couple of bogies underneath it and told me it was a new build at the RHDR I might have believed you… ;)

Whilst I love the BR Express Blue and glad it's being retained for the next ticket, I'd be quite happy to see the loco carry this livery while running in because No.7 looks great in black.
