Hmm. As a passenger, I was once standing at a droplight (with the train stationary) when a chap (probably in high-vis, though I don't remember for certain) came walking along beside the track and got me to open the secondary door lock so he could climb aboard.

Why do Vintage Trains run such short formations? Surely a Castle could easily manage 12 or 13 on the hook.

I'm not sure the platforms at each end could accommodate that length of train

it used to be eight coaches which I think was down to platform length and run round . This year has run with nine

second part is they will have done the maths and 8 coaches generates a return , doesn't flog the locomotive or the crews into the ground and can sustain regular operation

Presumably WCRC and LSL have done the same maths and come up with different answers

with respect LSL are not running repeat operation short haul and even WC aren't . Just because you want to see an engine tonked around on 12-13 doesn't mean an operator has too

Both operators are running far more regularly than VT - I am simply saying the business model obviously works.

Could be to do with the number of tickets sold.

I’d imagine not, even when WRC were still involved the SE ran with 8/9 and still made a profit with several trains each year sold out.

The path we have in the WTT now runs us into P2 at Snow Hill - the longer section between signals allows us to stable a longer train. P1 could only accommodate 8 coaches and loco.

Just to correct, WCRC are currently running a repeat operation of similar distance to Birmingham-Stratford Upon Avon. 'The Jacobite? ;)

Startford to Birmingham 30 miles , Fort William to Mallaig c 45 miles . VT two round trips so 120 miles , WCRC two separate trips , separate engines, but yes i will give you it is regular short haul steam

7 on each train, apart on Saturdays when the trains are required to pass at Glenfinnan where loop length dictates that the afternoon train goes out as Load 6.
