    Would they have employed brakesmen at the tops of inclines to pin down brakes? This was done at the top of the Lickey incline as shown on one of the Railway Roundabout DVDs

    I’ve not heard of that happening on the GWR; it was always the train crew as far as I am aware.

    A while back probably around 2000, I was on a relay between Milford and Ferrybridge.
    I recall one of the spoil trains consisted of 80 empty wagons on arrival and was planned to split into 2 x 40 when loaded.
