Looking at RTT seems to have gone extremely well, passed Settle Jnc eastbound at 1444 and westbound at 1446! ;)

Just makes me think of a mechanic stood next to it going "Klingon cloaking device? Klingon? Saw you coming, mate. They go all wobbly round the warp core. Romulan's what you want, they'll see you right."

Testing the new Steam powered warp core they fitted during overhaul. It is well hidden by the spam can casing Warp_core_breach_flashpoint.jpg

Anyway, to bring it back around, how long has it been since there was last an unrebuilt on the mainline? Must be a few years.

No 10A plate yet either. Would look great down here double heading with Manston if they keep that in weathered condition for a while as planned. That is a photo charter I would pay to go on.

The idea of that was to disperse the exhaust rapidly so as to make a train less visible from the air - a request from the Ministry of Transport. The loco went through various iterations:
    • November 1940 - Three small diameter stovepipe chimneys, exhaust dispersed but performance severely impeded
    • December 1940 - Two larger diameter stovepipe chimneys, exhaust obscured lookout but reduced visibility from the air
    • January 1941 - Plates fitted between the smoke deflectors to give the exhaust extra lift. Effective, but loco very visible from the air
    • 15 February 1941 - Trials abandoned, returned to traffic with conventional chimney
By that time, enemy action had subsided as the Germans prepared to move their focus to the Eastern Front.

Tom when I read the words Eastern Front I had to check which thread I was reading. Thought it may have been a reference to the ESR!

As far as I'm aware, 34092 still has the tender chassis from 34051, and vice versa. The tenders were swapped at Barry. However 34092 had a high-sided tank fitted at its last overhaul.

Incidentally, has 34067's tender been modified? Something looks decidedly odd about the tender in the photo on the last page...

Hmm, yes, I did think that myself... Probably not Barry then - But I have read in the past that those two did swap tenders, and I think it was after withdrawal... So not sure just when, and I don't have access to my books at the moment.

I've just had a quick look and doesn't seem to be any changes to the look of the tender that I can tell. Tangmere's tender is, I believe, an ex Merchant Navy tender chassis and does look a bit out of proportion compared to other Light Pacifics, to me at least.

I think the coal space has been extended backwards to either provide extra coal or water capacity or house the recording parts of TPRS & OTMR or somewhere accessible fir the AB pump. Remember the tender on 61994 was extended to increase water capacity and 6233 was modified toi give extra coal capacity.

    Cheers, Neil

If this is going to be solely used for NB duties, I think there's going to be a few upset Southern gricers especially the contingent on here. Hopefully it will get the odd turn on a WCME or a Dalesman from time to time.

Hopefully 34067 will stay at 10A Liam but the last time Tangmere did a CME it a was right battle near the Summit on Shap ( unassisted that was mind ) and that was in April.

TBH, it always amazes me we get any mainline steam down here in third rail territory. It'd be great to see more coming round the Cliftonville Curve, but with the West Coastway as busy as it is, not too surprising it's such a rare treat to see a Bulleid Pacific thundering over Boudary Rd level crossing.
