I know this subject has come up before but are we thinking along the lines of what are called die springs?

They're actually trapezoidal section. This is a side control spring from 2968's pony truck.

Well, from the photo it looks like it's sitting on a pallet, so maybe 75 to 80mm overall diameter? And (scaled) approx 200 - 250mm in height?

Note that there are two horizontal transverse springs, one ahead of and one behind the slide assembly.

    Oops two posts.
This spring is to LMS drawing D-10693. It is 1'-8 7/8" long, un-compressed, 6 1/4" OD and 2 3/4" bore. (I do not do metric on steam locos unless it is ejector or injector cones). This particular spring is now available in round section.

A most interesting read, Richard. I like how they could only make a third scale 3d printed model of one of the difficult features in the drawings. Saying that don't knock it, I say! The Short Stirling prototype was a third scale flying model of the planned bomber. There was only space for a pilot in the cockpit rather than full 7 man crew and they used 4 Tiger Moth [I think, certainly engines from the DH Moth range] engines in lieu of the full size engines.

These really are cutting edge techniques at work, here. The cylinder block and cambox are truly the business end of the whole reworking of this engine, and I for one find it totally engrossing, using of state of the art design and fabrication processes to finally bring this 87 year-old design conundrum to its ultimate, and very belated, fruition.

    Interesting candidate for 3D printing.

Oil and Gas manufacture is the natural home for this assembly. Welding and Heat Treatment are routine there.

I suspect David Elliott has better things to do than wait weeks while a 3D printer makes a full-size model of that component! 1/3 scale works well enough.

Most excellent reading! Things look to be progressing well! I hope the departure of Mark Allatt was for reasons other than friction - He's done a superb job in his roles both within the A1 & P2 Locomotive companies. I hope he will still be involved in some way, and that he enjoys the completed P2.

    Richard.
