Or had she already slipped and Mick was taking no chances, after all he's the one who gets the blame if other traffic is held up.

I haven't stopped laughing since I read your post. Yealand Summit 49: Oxenholme 64: Grayrigg 66: Tebay 77: Scout Green 64: Shap mp37 1/4 56.6. Seriously assisted from Carnforth all the way to Shap. Vicious safety valve lifting. OTT.

13 late start thanks to the TPE with the Glasgow behind on time. Merchant with the equivalent of 15 on. The options were --- get looped at Grayrigg for sure and possibly Penrith or get up to Carlisle on time and see what the loco can do with a heavy load this afternoon with less traffic around.

one does wonder if those so concerned about Diesels on the back didn't book the resulting loss of a coach or two may negate
the need for a Diesel in the first place

Very sad. Glad I didn’t waste money on this one. Meanwhile in the south Clan Line always runs DL free on normal charters with up to 12 on and in any conditions including the steep gradients west of Salisbury. For example the faultless start up the two miles of 1 in 80 from Sherborne with 12 up on 18th August. The loco is trusted by all concerned . I will now await the Exocet missiles from the keyboard warriors

one observation , 12 on a 1 in 80 is August is a little different to 12 on a 1in80 in October with damp rails and leaf fall . 70000 and Martin Mill comes quickly to mind .

    not quite an exocet :)

The CME has always been a bright star in the diesel free sky and until now I have never had any cause to doubt it

It was Bearsted bank not Martin Mill. The cause was lack of track clearance by NR and even the EMUs were struggling.

We still come back to the point though . 70000 caused considerable delay as a result of stalling . Somewhere a hefty bill was picked up , passengers days spoilt . A number on here expressed surprise that no tailgunner was taken and when the inevitable happened rather pointed out the obvious

Steam has no right to be on the network . Go back to SLOA days you were on eight coach limits on the S&C this time of year . I remember a day where 6201 lost an hour before Appleby slithering almost to stand on any shady slightly tree lined section .

To cap it all, no Ice Cream at Appleby.

Can things get any worse? Not in my book! There’s always ice cream when Clan Line stops at Appleby, and the sun shines, and . . .

    And there's the answer.

Do you really think that there are that many who would not book knowing that there would be a diesel on the back?

I am not going to get involved in the bickering about diesel assistance that has been going on for years but steam most definitely has the right to run on the network, assisted or unassisted.

Of course, but that does not include the right to impede scheduled services.
