It's a nice circular with a couple of new sections of track for the atlas. If it did anything I required around Manchester, it would have been an incidental bonus, as it's always luck of the draw.

The Guide Bridge move is intriguing, and speculating for a minute, it would be fairly unusual territory if it happened to be hauled by a Carnforth Pacific. Again, it would be a bonus rather than an expectation!

The diesel that has assisted that far just to ensure that the recently overhauled loco is able to continue unassisted for the rest of the day returning to Carnforth?

Also looks like the stock is moving to Hellifield on Saturday and from there to Preston on Sunday morning. Is there a block north of Preston or Lancaster on Sunday morning, there's nothing on RTT through Lancaster before 10am apart from Morecambe and Barrow services.

It's a standard possession opportunity ( Engineering Access Statement section 4) until 0930 Sunday Lancaster to Carnforth. The Lancaster - Preston possession clears at 0920 or 1020 depending upon the date. These are possession "opportunities" and the timetable is written around them.

Custom and practice varies across the railway. The Southern Routes and Anglia don't have many standard every weekend possessions apart from overnight maintenance. On the other hand they have many more abnormal ( one or two weekends only) possessions blocking a route for a whole day or weekend to get as much work done in one possession as possible.

    Cheers, Neil

I know we are only speculating but it would definitely not be a bonus. With all the ex LMS 4-6-0s that Carnforth have we have an opportunity for something as real as it gets. To have one of them back on the Midland Main Line would be much better than the "novelty" of something with a 3 as it's first number.

Each to their own. Something with a 4 at the beginning of the number has done various stages of the route on numerous occasions post-1971, including last Saturday. I'll be happy with whatever, having generally ceased booking tours based on specific locomotive allocations. Nevertheless, a Bulleid would definitely be a bonus for me, and very much for the novelty value. The Bulleid rail map of Britain won't fill itself!

Given the route and time of year what you need for certain is a sure footed locomotive, or two if you want to be certain. So it's not a particularly difficult script to write, I would have thought.

I do also recall the 2+ hours stuck on Bearsted with 70000 with Saphos two years ago, which was a spectacular example of what can go wrong at this time of year. Anyway, all rather hypothetical as we don't know. I'd say the odds are broadly in favour of an ex-LMS 4-6-0, but what happens, happens.

Is it possible that the train engine is an LMS 4-6-0 but with a pilot as far as Guide Bridge which is a newly-overhauled locomotive undergoing a loaded test run as far as that and returning thence in the path for a light engine? That would be a neat way of avoiding some of the costs of loaded test runs.

That was what can go wrong when an overloaded loco is expected to get up Bearsted Bank from walking pace at Maidstone East. There was a good reason why the Night Ferry was double headed when it went this way

The Cl.1s were issued last week and won’t change. We’re awaiting the final confirmation of the ancillary moves, which should have been issued this afternoon.

As JS implies above the times on RTT for the trip itself are correct so have a look there for confirmation to save bothering RTC.
