This is a question for Tom. On another site, an analysis has been done showing a breakdown of wheel arrangements and classes on the big four at both grouping and nationalisation.

The listing for the Southern shows one 4-4-0 tank loco at the grouping, taken over by the SR, I didn't know they had any, any ideas what it was, or is it correct?

Thanks for that, never heard of this one, thought they were all 2-4-0 tanks on the IOW

By grouping, true of the IWR (Ryde-Brading/Ventnor. They once employed a small ex-contractor's MW 0-6-0st, but it didn't last long). Never numbered in IWR days, only Sandown had been laid aside, with tired frames, at grouping.

The IWC fleet was far more diverse. At grouping consisting of three BP 2-4-0Ts, amazingly enough bought new (and smaller then their IWR counterparts). Nos. 4&5 (1876) were inherited from the constituent Ryde, Newport Rly. No.8 (1898) was a modernised edition, which bequeathed it's cab to Ryde on withdrawal. No.4 seems to have been OOS at grouping. No.7 was a 2nd hand BP 2-4-0T, ex SM&AJR (which replaced my favourite island loco, ex-NLR 4-4-0T, wdn 1907). No.6 was the new bought Black Hawthorn 4-4-0T, which the SR's PW engineer promptly exiled to the Ryde-Ventnor line.

Edit: somehow managed to lose IWC Nos.9-12, which were ex-LBSC Terriers.

Nothing I see in these old books on the Isle of Wight looks half as interesting as the old 4-4-0, you shown a picture of.
    That something they
    Should be preserving!

Ooh .... the grammar police have spoken! Now here come the maths police. 85 years. :Pompus:

No.6 was nice, but I still hanker after No.7 (ex-NLR, died of a tired boiler in 1907). For some reason, since the demise of Samsung Cloud, I can't extract my photo of it from my own archive, but an image appears on P50 of 'Current and Proposed New Builds', post #988. Put it this way, I doubt it's on anyone else's wish list, so if there's a flurry of phone calls between Fishbourne ferry terminal and Haven Street, about a large (by IoW standards!) mystery loco, you'll have a fair idea who won the lottery. :)

No, it's got nothing to do with grammar Howard. It's the content that makes no sense.

They = Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
2nd = Build a new one from scratch.

After all, they rebuilt a Ryde Pier Tram from scratch, so why not IWCR No. 6?

All together now ...."Oh no they didn't"! The tram is a (very very) heavy rebuild (indeed).

One mentioned before as a WIBN was the FYN Drewry railcar (same builder as the tram). Think 'rail mounted, petrol engined Chesterfield sofas, with a roof'. A perfectly delightful contraption which the Southern, quite unaccountably, didn't want! I'd love to see the look on the vehicle acceptance bod's face if presented with that one.

Tell you what, if you win the lottery first, you commission a new No.6, if I do, it'll be old No.7. How does that grab you? ;)

Well, If my rock star/acting/voice acting/writer career took off then I would happily, as well as a new build 455 Metrotank, LNER J70, Cambrian Railway 4-4-0 and SECR D 737 overhaul!

Be a busy bee! Just the way I like it! :D

I am sure they have, as do most heritage railways.
Doesn't hurt to dream though. :)
