If 4-4-0 tanks take your fancy, there is Metropolitan Rly No 23 in the London Transport Museum and Cavan & Leitrim Rly No 2 in Ulster Transport Museum:

When the last of the North London Rly 4-4-0 tanks was withdrawn by the LMS in 1929, it was initially set aside for preservation, but broken-up in 1932.

LMS were holding onto some interesting solitary survivors that they rather heartlessly cleared out. Can't blame them but still.

I think if you are rich and also come proffering the gift of an operational loco of useful size, finding a railway on which to base it will not be a problem. Fighting off potential suitors might be more of an issue!

Considering most the fleet I would bring back into service are quite small and not that powerful, I wouldn't think some of the steeper railways would be interested.

Unless they can deal with 1 coach trains.

If I had my millions, I think I'd start with bringing back the "near miss" loco which were set aside for preservation and then scrapped. Starting with these LMS ones: Kirtley 0-6-0, Johnson 0-4-4T, North London 4-4-0T. At least they're a useful size for a preserved railway...

How about Ben Alder and Midlothian too?

And an IOW railway 2-4-0 tank too, one of those was hung onto for a bit

 

Original IWR Ryde (BP/400 of 1864. Wdn July 1932) was cosmetically restored to (something close to) it's original appearance - Ryde works evidently threw little away! - and painted in lined shop grey, before in June 1934, being shipped to the mainland for the SR's planned museum. Stored with other potential exhibits in the paint shop at Eastleigh, it's subsequent loss, in April 1940, during the WWII scrap drive mightn't be what bugs me most about the sad chapter of the Austrian Corporal's vile regime, but it's most certainly still an item on a long list!

 

Although to be fair, there is the one on the Nene Valley Railway being built as a replica Y6 from a Belgian (?) tram. The work done on it looked good, and was quite convincing, but there hasn't been an update for some time.

You could talk to North Bay, and get them to do 4:3 copy of Southwold...

 

That would be closer to Jersey Rly Haro Haro (Sharp Stewart/2047 of 1870) died in a Midlands brickworks 1941 with it's nameplates on.

 

id rather have a manx northern 2-4-0T......
