    I believe they’ve stopped teaching that these days as it doesn’t always apply, for example weigh.

    And I don't know what easing of curves was carried out. Not much, if my memory of running to Meeth on a Hertfordshire Rail Tour ACE is a guide. 2 × 4TC, with a RMB, top 'n tailed by Cromptons turned 90° in its own length!

    STOP PRESS !! Chelfham station has won the ‘Hendy & Pendle Trust Volunteers Award’ at this year’s NRHA ceremony. Well done to all those volunteers involved with this ongoing project.

    Michael Messenger says in his book 'North Devon Clay' (p79) that 'on the old Marland line curves were as sharp as 9 chains (198 yards - 181m) and gradients as steep as 1 in 45 and 1 in 42, although the original line had been much worse.'

    Congratulations to all those involved with the restoration efforts at Chelfham over the past several years.
    Winning the Hendy & Pendle Trust Volunteers Award at the NRHA Ceremony today is a tremendous achievement. I'm afraid it means more work for you though - there's a big blue plaque to be fixed to the wall now!

    This is what makes German a pleasant language to read: 'ie' is always pronounced 'e' and 'ei' is always 'i' with no exceptions! By comparison, English is a dog's dinner with its Saxon, Latin and French roots. It must be a nightmare for non-native speakers.
